When I first got my 2nd gen back in late 2000's I had a single din cd player installed. The tech also ran a cable to the glove box that allowed an (old generation) ipod connection for playing music. Long story short the adapter that I used for a newer iPhone is not working well and I'd like to try running a new usb to lightning cable through the same run and remove the old.

I don't know much about stereo's, without having the exact model, is it fairly common (and likely) that his cable is plugged in directly behind/into the head unit? I'm just not sure if I should try pulling out the head unit itself or start beneath it like shown in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isG_EechOKY

Before you spend much time it would be in your best interest to get your deck's model number then look it up and see if it has a USB input on the back. My guess is that it does based on you having a single din installed in the late 2000's. USB connections started getting pretty popular on decks in the mid-late 2000's so that would make sense.

If that's the case, your ipod/iphone adapter is likely plugged straight into your deck so you will need to pop the deck out. The tech likely zip-tied it in also keeping it secure.

The video is pretty good for removal/install if you pop out the lower climate controls then remove the 4 bolts, the deck and housing should come right out. You shouldn't have to do any other wiring except replace the usb to lightning cable. The glove box drops down pretty easy also, just push the outsides inward and it drops down so you have good access to the routing the tech likely used.

I just recently removed my stock deck (which is exactly like the one in the video) and installed a double din deck. The removal and install of the controls and deck are pretty easy.

    Good luck!

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed to hear...

While browsing I read/saw that something related to the air bag is either ran in the same area, or also tied to the deck, is that true? I just want to make sure I can't to anything unsafe while messing with this.

    Cheers

I'll add... Take your time. As you start taking things apart, lay the parts out in order and similar fashion to how they came off.
It's EASY! Once you pop the heater controls off, it goes quick.

    Good luck...

    Hey there,

Quick answer, you should be fine as the airbag control module is underneath where the deck mounts. You would have to disassemble the lower portion of the dash to get into the airbag control module area. Basically you want to pull the deck out as much as required to replace the USB adapter.

See the following link for some other general info about the location of the airbag control module and a nice diagram on Post #16.
