Today, I finally swapped my driveshaft out for a new one. This new one happens to be a Tom Woods custom one-piece driveshaft.

Following the directions, I measured the bolt pattern dimensions on both of the flanges on either end of the driveshaft. In my case, it came to be what they call the T4 flange at both the rear diff and the transfer case.

    download (11).jpg

Once the flange is determined, the distance from the front flange to the rear flange needs to be measured in order to get the appropriate length. Mine came out to approximately 68 13/16 inches.

When I called up Tom Woods, they only really needed the flange bolt pattern and the flange-to-flange length to build the driveshaft. I was then told it would take one business day to build and ship the driveshaft, three to four days for it to arrive from Utah to Texas via UPS.

I placed my order last Friday and I was charged the following Monday, as well as being notified of shipment. It was out for delivery late Thursday morning, the same week.

The specs on my driveshaft (according to my invoice) are as follows:

TYPE A, DOUBLE CARDAN, CV DRIVE SHAFT
    4" TUBE-STANDARD LENGTH SPLINE W/ DUST CAP
TOYOTA TRUCK 4TH DESIGN CV FLANGE FOR 1310 SERIES
    U-JOINT @ TRANSFER CASE
TOYOTA TRUCK 4TH DESIGN FLANGE FOR 1310 SERIES U-JOINT
    @ DIFFERENTIAL
    FINISHED LENGTH RUNNING POSITION
FACE OF FLANGE TO FACE OF FLANGE= 68.813"
    1 589.00
USE SPICER NON GREASE ABLE U-JOINTS (5-1310X)

As soon as it arrived, I emptied out the box. It included instructions for customer inspections and instructions for customer maintenance. Everything was already lubricated, per the maintenance instructions.

It was a simple bolt-in installation. It took approximately 30 minutes to swap driveshafts. Torque on the flange bolts was 60 ft./lbs. according to my research, but I didn't have the correct attachment for my torque wrench to torque-to-spec.

    1212191351_HDR.jpg
(looking at online pictures, most people have the slip-joint on the differential side, instead of the transfer case side like factory and how I have mine. Drives great, though.)

I took it on a test drive and I can definitely say there's a marked improvement in smoothness and throttle/clutch response while driving. I think dropping the middle joint and carrier bearing are definitely an improvement, but it could also be because my stuff was "abused" or "worn."

I know clearance was raised by @BassAckwards , so the following pictures are of different angles, hopefully satisfying the clearance questions. This is a 4" tube so a larger diameter driveshaft than the OEM driveshaft. Also, @riz_atx and @MattCowsmasher were interested in going with this driveshaft.

I seent it!! Very nice piece of hardware definitely has more clearance in the middle of the chassis. Towards the 3rd member appears to be about the same but shaft has a bit more angle.

It definitely points better towards the rear diff.

    Hell yeah, awesome info bro!!

that 4" fits in there nicely. Do you happen to know the thickness of the tubing so we could calculate critical speed? This has me itching for a one piece even though i dont need one haha

    Morning, Robert.

No clue about the tube thickness. Maybe give them a call and let me know what you figure out. :fistbump:
