So i have an 01 3.4 5vzfe, did all the normal tests and everything and have come to the conclusion the rings are bad on cylinder 3 for sure, possibly 1 and 5 also. So with that being said, does anyone have a rebuild kit that they’d suggest? Thanks

being a Tacomaworld member for a while in my vast exploration (while at work) of the site the consensus points to a low mileage replacement or JDM replacement vs. rebuilding the engine. There are options for a rebuild and some reputable builders. However - it will cost the price o a used 200K mile Tacoma 4x4 to get done. The engine however can be 1/2 that price almost. If you can do the work yourself you save yourself a lot of money. More time but less money this way.

Care to share the testing results for others to confirm your analysis? Would hate to see you rip the engine that far down if it just needs some valve work.

So i have a very close friend of mine that has rebuilt a ton of engines and i have also myself just not on a toyota. that’s why i’d rather do a rebuild on it, to have that under my belt for the most part lol. This isn’t my primary vehicle but it will be my commute vehicle which is 156 miles a day. I’ve drove around 23k miles in the last 4 months so i’d like to have it pretty well new, just looking for a good rebuild kit.

    Cylinder 1: 90psi
Cylinder 3: 0psi wet 110psi which dropped pretty quickly in my opinion
    Cylinder 5: 100psi

so i also brought cylinder 3 up to tdc, put some air to it and it was blowing to crankcase pretty bad. With that being said, the guy i bought it from had apprently ran it extremely hard with lack of maintenance or inspection lol. In the air tube in the fender to the air box was 1/2 full of mud. Also, there was no filter in the airbox and the tube was broke to the air box. Pretty sure it was like that for a while so i’m positive it sucked up a bunch of trash and scarred up the cylinder walls pretty extreme. Hopefully just be able to change mostly everything on the bottom end and hone it but we’ll see when i tear it apart

Since you have positively identified serious leakage into the crankcase, that does suggest that you're on the right track.
If there is suspicion of having ingested mud, dirt, sand, and potentially even water, I would definitely lean toward replacing the engine rather than rebuilding it. IMO, honing it probably wouldn't be sufficient. This block sounds like a candidate for being bored.

That’s going to be the determining factor of what i’m going to do probably. Once we have it torn apart i’ll be able to see if it needs boring or could get by with honing. But i do believe with as bad as it is, it’ll probably need boring so if that’s the case i may try to just get a used or JDM. Trying to keep it cost efficient as possible due to the fact that their is still other work that needs to be done. I only paid $800 for the truck but i’m also not trying to have to spend 8k on it lol.
