My 99 Corvette had a fluky fuel gauge. Running a tank of Chevron gas with Techtron got it unstuck every time. I'd try a tank of that first before doing anything mechanical, destructive or expensive.

Here ya go OP. Not a Tacoma but I'm betting it will still solve your issue. Only difference is you will probably have to drop your own tank to do it b/c there no access hatch like in a 4runner.

Wouldn't it be easier to calculate the MPG on the 10 gallons that OP is filling up with, reset the trip meter and then just drive 15 gallons worth and see what goes in? I would assume the gauge is bad over 10 gallons of obstruction in the tank . . ., but why would you need to run out of fuel to test the theory of the gauge being bad?

I can tell you i just dropped my tank and the tank was pretty much clear, the fuel pump assembly on the other hand had small metal shavings in the filter sock. Now why Toyota thought that this little sock was an adequate filter for the whole system is beyond me. I can also tell you i have had two injectors go out on me in the last 50k miles, whether or not the lack of filter helped cause this i can't say. But anytime the fuel system is to be worked on toyota suggests running the vehicle out of fuel so other then maybe small amounts of wear in the fuel pump, if you don't leave it in on for an extended period of time its really not going to make much of a difference.

Also if you have ever pulled out our specific fuel pump assembly you would see that there will be no increase in sediment hitting the sock than during normal operation.

    It's a secret
IF it was a "mule" vehicle and there are a few kilos of cocaine in the tank offsetting the volume capacity...

Bust open those cocaine bags into the tank and allow it to mix with the fuel...you will get upgraded 91Coctaine (given your Taco is 2nd Gen) fuel and your truck with be able to get 43906MPfuckingGs!

I had a 1985 F150 that started doing that the last year or so that I owned it. But by then I'd had it long enough that I had a pretty good idea how many miles I could get on a tank. I just used the trip meter and was pretty conservative. That truck only had a 16 gallon tank and got about 16 mpg. That is a range of 250ish miles. I never drove it over 200 without filling it up.

    two possibilites here:
A- the sediment is below the pickup, so it wouldn't be picked up
B- the sediment is above the pickup, so it would already be picked up.

seriously, can you give me an MS paint or something to show how this is even possible?

For over $500k I'd shred the truck.

Would suck to destroy it though and it turns out it's just a bad gauge.....but what if its $500k????

As someone who constantly runs out of gas for no apparent reason other than I’m just an idiot, I can say that I’ve never had any issues. I’ve run out of gas at least 100 times in several different cars and never had any fuel system related problems.

How? I've run out 1 time in my life, and that was when I first got a motorcycle that had a reserve switch. Previous owner hooked up the lines wrong so the regular setting was actually on the reserve spot. When it sputtered, it was dry....

Mostly because I really hate stopping for gas. Or cause I’m in a hurry and gambling that I can make it without stopping. Or cause my ‘01 Cavalier would go from 1/4 tank to out of gas in 5 miles. I used to keep a bike in the truck of that car cause I ran out of gas like once a week. I’m a slow learner I guess.
