From experience I can say that bear spray does work in many situations though not all (depending on wind direction, vegetation, and how keyed up the bear is).

The past three years I've a spent more than a month in the summer working in remote back county of Alaska. For those trips everyone in our group carries either bear spray or firearms depending on how comfortable they are with guns. I carry Remington Model 870 Express Super Magnum as my bear gun. Heavy yes, but I'm not worried about its stopping power and placing the slug where I want it.

Fortunately we mostly work at high elevations above the tree line, so you can see bears coming from a ways off. We've had to deploy bear spray a few times on charging or curious bears and it has deterred all but one. For that one, the shotgun slug I fired over its head sent it packing. Good for the bear because the second one I was going to shoot wasn't going to be warning.
