Stock 3rd Gen Capability

Hey Everyone!
I'm new to TW and even newer to off-roading. I'm taking a trip out to Anza Borrego desert this week in my stock 2019 TRD OR 4x4 and was wondering about its capability on those roads. i.e. should I worry about airing down if I'm not gunna be tackling large obstacles? I'll mainly be driving down the dirt roads/ small hills to a hiking trail. Also, will the stock Kevlar's handle just fine? Thanks in advance! I look forward to getting deeper into the off roading world!

 

Welcome to TW! If you are sticking to dirt roads then airing down should not be necessary. The TRD OR is a very capable offroad vehicle even stock. So in your case, you should be completely fine IMHO.

 

unless you plan on driving through sand or deep mud, no need to air down. you might not even need 4x4. for dry environment those tires handle very well. but if its slightly wet dirt roads/steep hills dont accelerate too hard because the tires will spin.

Airing down a little will make the ride nicer. Might be easier on the truck too.

 

Yeah, even as little as 5-10 psi drop can make long days offroad much more enjoyable.

Avoid Sandstone Canyon. The collapse that the Jeep club has dug through is not friendly to our wide bodied 3rd Gens. You can only go so far and need to turn around.

Diablo Drop Off will depend on the terrain.

Airing down will certainly smooth out the ride, but if you're sticking to the main roads, it shouldn't be necessary. If you plan on hitting the mud patches, use 4x4H and be warned that getting all that mud off isn't easy and will take a few trips to the car wash bays. It did it once to experience it and I'm not inclined to do it again unless I have to.

Agree, also helps with steering too. Steering on these trucks is super tight and sensitive when everything is new... every little pebble jolts the wheel around when the tires are firm. Air down a bit and its much smoother.

 

I hope you are having fun out there. I have never been out in the Anza Borrego, it covers a pretty large area on the map. Make sure you get some photos for us, and keep the rubber side down.

 

Bring a shovel and some planks or 2x4 bits or something — basic recovery tools. Have a good one! Camp out and use the darkness of Anza to watch the stars. The Perseids are pretty visible right now.
