What was the best model year from the last decade?

Spoiler alert: everybody is going to choose their own year; other than that it will be the 2015, 2017, or 2020.

2015 was the last year of the 2nd gen, so it's the most updated and most recent out of the 4.0 V6 models.

2017 was the last year of no TSS, the first year of the 3rd gen Pros, and the second year of the 3rd gens-- a lot of people avoid purchasing the first year of a new generation of any vehicle to avoid various issues that pop up and give the manufacturer time to iron out the kinks.

2020 finally brought Apple Carplay and Android Auto, full LED headlights, and electronically-adjustable front seats. The transmission issues seem to be mostly resolved although that seem to have happened sometime during the 2018-2019 model years; however those years just didn't update very much at all outside of TSS and minor cosmetic changes. It's also simply the newest overall so it should be "best".

 

1. More power, made more efficiently, compared to the 4.0, is the only thing relevant to my previous post.

2. Yes, I enjoy a robust engine sound every so often. But 95% of the time, I'm below 2000 RPM.

Ok I might be a little biased but this is how I look at it.
1st gen = 99-2004 - best basic truck. Analog, mechanical, DIY fixer's dream.
2nd gen = 2005-2011 - basic mechanical truck still there, just a little more comfortable, still basic to fix, but basic radio.
2.5 gen = 2012-2015 - still mechanical but now bluetooth, and in my eyes, better looking front end
3rd gen = brought in the age of too many electronics to go wrong.

My pick......2013. The last year before entune became required.

What specific electronics does a 3rd Gen have that a 2nd Gen doesn’t? If anything the 3rd Gen has less electronics to go wrong as they consolidated some systems.

Sound like another one of those opinions that looks good on paper, but has no basis in actual facts.

And don’t say “crawl control”, which simply uses the existing ABS system, and has not been the source of any problems.

 

First of all, I am not the typical "3rd gen hater." I know a lot of people around me that have 3rd gens and I like the way they look.
Second of all, this is an opinionated poll, and opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. I am looking more at digital versus analog. The crawl control is something that the truck does for you. It may use the existing abs system, but you are not controlling it, the truck is doing it for you. Hence my "opinionated argument." I am not saying that anything is wrong or has gone wrong with these systems.....yet, it is something that the dealer has to replace if something does go wrong with it. And let me just challenge the statement that you made and I quote " If anything the 3rd Gen has less electronics to go wrong "........really so outside of the "crawl control" there is also.....
1. Dual zone "automatic" climate control
2. Driver selectable terrain system
3. Push button start
4. "Smart access" to unlock doors
5. Blind spot monitoring system
6. Rear parking sonar sensors
7. Multi-information display in the dash

Should I go on? Now I do know that these are more creature comforts that the truck did not have before. A lot of them are very positive and beneficial, I am just looking at more things that can "electronically" go wrong. Now there are ways around it but this why I said the 2013, in my opinion, is the best and not the 2015 due to the problems with the entune system that was first integrated into the 2014 models.

 

Owned my 2015 for 4-1/2 years and never one trip to dealer or any mechanic for that matter. Installed a remote start and tonneau cover was all I did to it and my entune radio never failed a single time. It rebooted itself a handful of times in 4-1/2 years but wasn’t anything major. Never through and lights/codes for anything wrong with it and still ran like a champ when I traded it in with seemingly the same amount of power it had when I purchased it.

Personally I think the Tacoma’s have their benefits to each. 1st gens simple, 2nd gens little better moving to more modern, 3rd gens definitely reliable as always but much more modern on many aspects (fun, comfort, safety, off road features). Tacoma holds its resale as the top truck for a reason and unless I have a specific need for a larger truck to tow more I’ll always be in a Tacoma. They just work and they just last! Everything else they add I view as a bonus where some view as a hassle or something to go wrong. However, if those folks were running the automotive industry we’d have no fuel injection, no auto transmission, no air conditioning, no intermittent wipers, definitely no Bluetooth, cruise control, or steering wheel controls along with many other things . People want more than the model A.

Agreed I drive a 19 and voted for a 15 bc of the pro in that model year. If I didnt buy mine new I'd have bought a 15 pro 6mt

 

You listed a bunch of stuff that is less likely to go wrong, stuff that people by and large don’t have problems with, and things that use the exiting ABS system, fitted since the 90s. For example, Push button start is more reliable that a key cylinder, as is keyless entry.

Sounds like yet another “looks clever in writing, but not based on facts” type opinions we see here so often.
