I've been getting 16-18mpg. that's combined city and freeway... some flat, some hills, sometimes 70+mph, and 87 and 89 octane. it pings on the hills with 87 and not with 89. (maybe depending on which gas station, too). i tried babying it to try to get that magical (mystical?) 20mpg. haven't succeeded yet..

87 Octane at both places. I don't put the premium in my truck.

I did several comparisons between 87 and 91 octane and found no advantage buying more expensive premium gasoline. Ethanol, however, is a terrible product added to gasoline. In Mexico (no ethanol), my mpg always is better by 1-2 mpg.

Terrible. I'm getting the same MPGs as I did in my Tundra with the 5.7, 14 MPG. I also have a front level and 33x12.2" tires though.

The main advantage in most premiums is the higher engine cleaning additives. I run mid grade to get some of that. Ethanol for sure lowers mileage as you say, since it has lower energy than gasoline.

I run a bottle of Techron or other gas treatment every so often... I never experienced any mileage boost after doing so... I can only hope that is why I am not having injector issues.
The 87 octane gas I buy has the same cleaning agents as 89 or 91 octane... by law, for air quality, etc. Is that only in California? Am I mistaken?

Wives tale.... if its a top tier qualified gas station additive packages are the same regardless of fuel octane.

I've broken 30 mpg once, going 65 from Indiana to Pennsylvania, but normally I get 28 on that run. I did do a lot of maintenance before that trip, and may have had weather on my side.
I chalk it up to my 5 lug weighing 3300 lbs empty, and 3550 with my stuff. In the winter I cannot break 24, winter gas is a killer. I get 22 around town. The 4 bangers are awesome at mpgs, but the problem is that they do terrible at high speed. Designed primarily for foreign markets. On a short 100 mile run doing 45 following a trailer I got what I consider unverifiable 35mpg, but overall if you do work the v6 power is always worth it. Unless you want cheap and super easy maintenance.

Top Tier just means they meet the minimum requirements, not all are the same. Shell, which I tend to use, all grades are Top Tier, however their premium V-Power Nitro+ has additional engine cleaning additives:
    https://www.shell.us/motorist/shell-fuels/shell-v-power-nitro-plus-premium-gasoline.html
From the Top Tier website FAQ:
Do some brands have higher detergent levels?
Formulations are proprietary to each company, however, each formulation is screened for compliance to the TOP TIER™ requirements.

You might be talking to the wrong wives ;)

Cold weather starts, winter treads, lots of idling and lots of daily 4 wd use. I don’t bother checking the mileage in the winter.

I’m coming to grips to the poorer mileage these trucks get. I’ve just recently purchased mine. Enjoying the functionality, and actually using it as a truck in awkward places pulling trailers etc makes the mileage irrelevant to a high degree. Overall I’m really happy with the truck
Coming from a 2000 dodge diesel 4x4 extended cab. 530,000 kms. Body rusted out.

Yup I thought is was a fluke but just filled up after being a lead foot and got 23.7 average! I don't know how this is happening now! 2010 4.0L TRD Sport only thing is cold air intake and bed cover which is getting ready to be removed.

Funny thing....I got improvements of up to 8% just by putting a tonneau cover on my Taco...

That is good to know! Does the 8% savings pay the cost of the cover in a year or is more valuable as an anti-theft feature?
