It's sort of just getting started around here. It's as if the majority of does are coming in over a broader amount of time. This Buck stayed within a 100 yard radius aggravating one of four does. This was a very interesting hunt. I found the deer with binos around 1500 yards away. It took me 45 more minutes to get to a good shooting spot 450 yards away.

Here is something odd I cannot explain. While walking around the cove to where the Buck should be I found this old bone that had hitched a ride about 4 feet off the ground on a huckleberry bush?? Mind you this is about 500 yards from the nearest trail. It's at nearly 6000ft in elevation, no livestock for miles. The bone is about 14 inches long and 2 inches round. Has to be cow or pig?? Too big for deer. Pretty sure it's not human. It is near a very popular hiking location. I just left it as is!

OK. Home last night after a 14 hour drive. Quick trip recap (minus the misses :D):

Day three - 1 mile stalk into some various fingers and bowls and I found a Doe on lookout so I belly crawled to the bowl ledge to look in while Dad circled around to the top of them. I saw a napping buck and another doe. He wound up no more than 15 feet above them. There was no way I could shoot now so I did my best to signal Dad there was a buck below him. He finally got on top and the doe stood up so he brought his gun up, then the buck stood up. Buck down! Young one (3.5 maybe) with great genes/potential! If only we had a lease on this place. would love to see this guy in a couple years!

Day 4 - Stalked in on a small 3x3 and couple big does. Doe down at about 150 yards. Back home in the tree.

New thing we tried was once we pull the fillets out (soon as possible) we pulled some belly flap meat (skirt steak ish) since it wasn't dry as jerky yet and made little tacos. Little tough texture. but made a great snack!

    CdOCUieciW2BFQlHmbpP4Jq_1Kyt0_DpbFiwWnEK_e79c915b3d5ba78850d9cb81aacf2bb43952a7da.jpg

Day 7 of 7 and I was still deer-less. We had meat covered so we went out with the intention of me only shooting if it was a nice shooter buck. Last 30 mins of legal shooting roughly and I spot a real nice buck walking straight at us where we were hiding! Of course he came from a different direction and when I turned, the doe with him was <100 yards and staring straight at me. She bolted and he turned broadside at 150-180 ish. I had just enough time to flip my gun up onto my knee in a weird leaning backwards position and let one fly as soon as he bolted. I hit a little back but the thud of the 50 cal was heard. Of course he turned and jumped the fence to the canyons and laid right there on the edge. I was reloading as I was running. Not an easy feat  I tried to get to where he wouldn't go downhill into canyons, but that's where he went. I just stood on the edge and watched him. He laid down in an open spot and I marked on GPS. at this point there was next to no light and he was still just looking around. We had to back out and make calls for permission for recovery.

I had to get on the road to beat a storm so Dad had to go in. We knew the coyotes were gonna get him sadly and they did. But he was recovered along with one backstrap.

The light in this photo is night mode on phone. It was daaark.

Squirrel cooked on low while I was at work today and it will go on high tomorrow at work and the dumplings should be done by lunch.
