    Hey all,

What do you recommend for a quality shop manual?

I got Haynes for 2005 to 2018, and it sucks like all Haynes manuals do. First time trying to diagnose an issue (heated seats) and it has absolutely nothing on that. Heated seats aren't mentioned anywhere, not even in the wiring diagram. All info is too generic, book is basically written for a 2nd gen, 3rd gen just being an afterthought.

    Help me out.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Haynes & Chilton were the shop manuals most DIY mechanics had on their bookshelf for general reference. I still have my Haynes shop manuals for my late '70s Dodge van. I considered buying one of the Haynes shop manual for my truck (1st generation Tacoma), but I understand that the Factory Service Manuals, though kind of pricey, is the most accurate & detailed for all generations of Tacoma trucks.

I also purchased the Haynes for Taco Gen 2 and am disappointed. Any updates on this, any links to the actual Factory Shop manuals?
I see them on eBay for ~$250 and am thinking that's the way to go.

I would stump up for the actual Toyota FSM. I lost faith in Hayne's/Chilton's years ago when I was putting a new clutch in my S10. Chilton's said in big, bold letters, DO NOT bench bleed the clutch slave cylinder. It must be bled in situ. I probably went through two quarts of brake fluid trying to bleed that sumbitch with it installed. Finally drove down to the Chevy dealership and got a guy I knew in the Service Dept to print out the relevant pages from the FSM. In big, bold letters: "The clutch slave cylinder must be bled prior to installation. Attempts to bleed the system while installed will not be successful." Took it out, bled it on the bench, and had it sorted within ten minutes. Since then, I have always had a FSM for every vehicle I own.

Another option is to look at either Mitchell's or All-Data (These are the services commercial garages use). They all have a DIY rate, and you pay per-vehicle you want access to. IIRC, my All-Data costs me about $50/five years per vehicle.

^^^This. Elsewhere on here you'll see how to print each section to PDF using firefox in a way that makes compiling easier. Spend a day doing it. Worth it. While you're there grab TSBs, etc.
