I haven't been able to find an answer to this yet. Maybe I didn't try the right search combination, I don't know. But here's my question:

I had a 2016 Hyundai that if you were sitting in the car, keys were with you, and the car was in park, and then you tried to lock the doors, it wouldn't allow you to. They'd immediately unlock. This is a safety feature that prevents you from accidentally locking your key in the car.

I have a 2017 Taco TRD Sport and wanted to know if this was an option with this truck. I purchased this truck from an auction (absolutely love it, btw); however, there was only one key that came with the truck. I'm always leery about leaving the key in the truck and then closing the door. For example, I live in South Carolina and the last few days have been cold enough to produce some frost on the windshield. So I start the truck, toss the keys in the center console, and then scrape the windshield. It gives me anxiety thinking that I'll somehow bump the lock and lock the doors and then my keys are stuck on the inside while my truck is running - and I have no spare.

    Thanks for any input.

With engine running - pretty sure ALL vehicles will let you LOCK.
With engine OFF - I think Toyota WILL let you LOCK. And not sure that there is anything that can be done.
You could always add a remote start "with the cellphone APP".

EDIT: OK, I see what your saying about transmission in PARK.

When I would sit in my Hyundai, whether the car was on or off and in park, if I would try to lock the doors, they would immediately unlock. If I put it in Drive, they would auto-lock. Likewise, if I were driving and tried to unlock the car, they would immediately lock (I guess to keep people from jumping out of the car while driving??). I just wanted a fail-safe way of making sure I didn't accidentally lock my keys in the truck. So does the truck know if the key is inside? And if so, would it not allow the door to be locked if it's in parked?

I've noticed that my truck does the same (with H-Key). Push - To - Start may be different? But I don't think that you can change this with what is available on the truck.

This is my experience so far with the key fob and all:
-Car off, keys in car, lock from inside - locks
-Car off, keys in car, lock from outside - does not lock. Long beep until you open door because keys are inside.
-Car on, keys in car, lock from inside - locks

I will have to try turning the car on, leaving the keys in the car, and try locking it from the outside. As far as I know, it shouldn't allow the lock sensors to work as the car is on.

A quick question, why don't you keep the keys on you while you're outside scraping the ice?

EDIT: I have the push to start

I thought he had the push-to-start, as he said he starts the truck and tosses the key into the center console.
    @gab1972 Which do you have?

Mine won’t lock with the fob in the truck. Try it with your window rolled down.

    I have Push To Start.

One of few reasons I'd keep the keys in the car with it on would be trying to warm the truck up while I'm scraping off the ice. It's nice to start the truck, run the heater, scrape off the frost, and then get into a warm truck. #FirstWorldProblems I know.

Just a note, if you start the truck, you can take the keys with you outside the truck, it will stay running. I've done this plenty of times.

Cant comment on your issue as I don't have push to start. But I have disabled the auto unlock when shifting to park. That's so stupid. Even worse is the above from Hyundai. Yea it may keep you from locking keys in the car but there's no way I'd want doors unlocked every time its in park. That's a car jacking waiting to happen.
That few seconds between someone trying to open your door and them realizing you are not going to open it, gives you time to put a couple rounds through the door.

I may have been wrong about sitting in the car, car on, keys with you, and not being able to lock. I do know if you were driving, you couldn't unlock the car. It may be similar to how the passenger seat somehow knows if someone is sitting in the seat. So if someone is sitting in the seat, the seatbelt chime would go off. Maybe it's that way with the drivers seat. So if the seat doesn't detect weight, then it wouldn't allow you to lock. But if you were sitting in the truck, keys with you, and wanted to lock the doors, you could. Therefore, carjacking averted. But if it didn't detect weight in the seat, car on, keys in the car, the doors couldn't be locked.

Colorado with push to start here. My fob spends most of the winter in a pocket of my winter coat. When I have to clear snow/ice from the truck, I start it, turn on the heated seats, hit the defrost button, and then get to clearing.

Not sure about with the engine running, but I have (not on purpose) tried and failed to lock the fob inside when the truck is off. Beeps like crazy until I get the key outside the truck. As someone that's locked keys in a vehicle too many times, this is the best feature of PTS/electronic key fob that I've seen.

Now I just need to figure out how to get water spots out of my rear seats. =( I was helping my daughter move her aquarium from one apartment to another and some of the aquarium water splashed onto the seats. HATE water spots.
