What is this for? little dash "grate" (pic)

Can someone tell me what this is for (see pic)? I've done a little searching and didn't come up with anything. I've seen people mount their Pedal Commander right over that, but wasn't sure if that was a good idea if there was a temperature sensor or something behind it.
