Well this is interesting, I’m playing around with MSI afterburner and the RX580 and the core clock is set to 1450, memory clock 2100, temp limit 90C and stock voltage.
With FurMark running it’s stable, running 76C, 2100 memory, but the core clock is staying around 1050.

If it’s not thermal throttling then it would be an under volt issue right? Doesn’t under-volting cause instability?

You're hitting the power wall for your current power settings. The Bios of the card will set a hard power limit that the card cannot exceed. In after urner you usually can turn up the max allowable power to the GPU, or the power target in other words, with the power slider. Try cranking that if it's available. You won't do any harm taking it to max. Don't mess with the voltage though until trying that if you even can touch the voltage.

Honestly the 580 is not a good overclocking card. Really between the 200 series and 500 series you have the same GPUs just refined a bit with better binning, smaller transistors, and more power. So the 580 is already tweaked pretty hard from factory to be what it is stock which is also why they run hot.

Also usually the crappiest GPUs overclock the farthest, though overclocking only helps a pile of manure get so far. I know folks who have doubled or tripled the frame rates out of cards like the 710 and 1030... all the way up to playable framerates at 720p after implementing custom Bios and power supplies in the cards. Not worth it except for the fun of it.

Thanks for the info, it seems stable with the power limit all the way up, 1425 core clock and 2100 memory clock, gained about 2 FPS in Unigine valley benchmark on the highest settings, it runs warm-ish (80 or so at full utilization) but hasn’t thermal throttled yet.
I’ll just leave it be from here and run it.

I have built many PC's in the past, Now I like low power devices. I have been messing around with the Jetson nano running off of a 12v power supply with a 5.1v downconverter for about a month or two. It draws 5w at low setting and 10w at the high setting. It will soon be an onboard computer for my entertainment, nav, music repository.

I didn't have a chance to get any Cyber Monday deals. Haven't really planned on doing anything with the PC, honestly. My buddy just built his own and he's been talking to me about it/getting advice so now I've got the itch...

    That bastard.

I went to micro center for the majority of it. Actually, all of it besides my graphics card was from there!

Wish we had somthing like that, with the frys electronics shutting down local parts are hard to find. Biggest is Best Buy. At least they have 3-4 options on everything but still not enough. Pretty much all evga, msi, or ASUS

New Egg is good too, unfortunately Amazon, Walmart, Ebay is shutting down retail stores. Used to like to go to the computer swap meets at the Fairplex with my dad when he was still with me, it was fun just to browse.

Here the local place is on the rebound now. With price matching support and online ordering they're gaining steam rather than going backwards.

Best Buy still sells PC parts? Seems like after Circuit City and CompUSA disappeared, BB stopped selling a lot (in store) and raised prices on what they still did sell. Other than Micro Center, box stores (in my area) were way to expensive for some parts, especially mainboards and processors.

If anyone is looking for a good portable CD/DVD/BD drive, get the Pioneer BDR-XE05S. I just ripped a CD with a hole in the top layer with no issues.

Amazon and NewEgg are my go to these days.

I also got all of the fans in and realized I forgot to order 4pin Y-splitters... Those should be in tomorrow.

In my area they stopped a long time ago, but recently started again and the prices aren’t terrible when you factor in shipping at least from Newegg who I tend to not want to deal with anymore.

    I did a thing today...
ROG Strix RX580 ordered and 2 1TB Samsung 860 EVO's, I decided that the RX580 is good enough performance for now and when the new Generation AMD or Nvidia cards come out I'll look at those, I don't need VR performance yet as I don't own any VR headsets and the extra money saved over the 5700 XT went to SSD storage.

Funny I bought my brother a 1660 as a last second Christmas gift. It's going in an ITX rig so I wanted something that can do 1080P but without much wattage draw or heat production. The 580 is close to the same amount of performance but it's power and heat production are a little high for my tastes. Good call on the SSDs though, it's all about maximizing budget not maximizing the card you card afford. I would of waited for a 5500XT 4GB card but I want to slip this card in the system I'm building him and no one locally had the cheaper end 5500XT lol.

    Nice!
I considered the Nvidia options but it just didn’t seem right to but Nvidia in an AMD rig.
I just got on EBay and started looking at the options and i liked the RGB and triple coolers so I decided to go ahead and get the ROG card, if nothing else it will be either cooler or quieter than the MSI that I’m borrowing right now.

Thanks, they were an impulse buy, with my Ryzen build now running I have an optiplex 7010 tower with an I-5 and 16GB Ram that I don’t really have a use for so I decided to pull my SATA 500Gb SSD as well as one of the mechanical 1TB drives out of the Ryzen and replace them with 1TB SSD’s and put those in the dell, as well as my old 1050TI and make a home theater PC out of it, it should be a very capable (and quiet) rig.

Could set it up as an unraid server (or freenas or something). Then you could have a use for all those old drives...a raid type (unraid is not "raid") setup to store a second local copy of important stuff. Plus with Dockers and vms could be fun to play around with.
