Avalon driver nailed me last night on the interstate. Didn't see it coming but I'm definitely sore today. From reading TW posts, it's going to be a good chunk of change to get her back square. Wondering if any of you have figures on diminished values you've been able to recover? Other party here has State Farm. I know it's gonna be a fight, but she's not six months old and only has 5000 miles. Any insights from experience on repairs and diminished values is appreciated. Tailgate is only scratched.

Don't have advice on the truck but definitely go to the doctor to get yourself checked out.

What a bummer. Get you and your Tacoma checked out good and fight the insurance company with some strong estimates if needed.

That sux OP...you're posting so that's a plus

Don't understand the insurance fight tho, you got rear ended. How in the hell would they argue that you are at fault for being rear ended?

I know that doesn't answer your detail questions but I can't help there, but comfort yourself in the fact that you should not be out of pocket regardless of the outcome would be my approach

Agreed with this, get your back checked out and make sure you have that paper trail if this pain continues to be an issue. I don't have a ton of advice for US depreciation but I was hit in a Honda Civic twice up here in Canada and my car only depreciated a thousand bucks. Auctions were buying that year of Civics for around 12.5k, mine was bought for 11k plus $400 for the winter tires I traded it with.

*** Appreciate you all's concern. I've insurance know I'm going to get checked out at the dr. I'm not worried about being at fault. I'm also looking to make sure I don't get stung on the diminished value claim, so any feedback on experiences would be great.

Get at least 5k. If the accident shows on carfax, you’re gonna take a hit.

$3000 won’t really cover the tainted record. $5000 will be adequate.

What insurance did the Avalon owner have?

New (to me) Tacoma owner. None at this time. Stock, but changes are planed in the future.
    Wow. Sorry to hear.
Yup, see your Dr. A.S.A.P. or maybe see urgent care, then your Dr.
What state are you in. Here in California, even getting rear ended, it's usually a fight between insurance companies. I was rear ended in my VW a few years back. California is a "No Fault" state & my insurance fixed my car, the Honda that hit me was covered by their insurance. The two companies needed to fight it ou between themselves.
Medical was another issue here. Sometimes it can be worth getting a lawyer, sometimes not. Depends on insurance companies and your state insurance laws.
Main thing is getting yourself checked out.

I’m in a similar situation. I was rear ended while sitting at a stop light by and older model Honda Pilot. My 17’ DCSB Limited has 45k on it. She destroyed my rear bumper, dented up the tailgate some, but the worst was how the gap between the cab & cargo box had changed. It pushed the box almost into the cab at the bottom and widened the gap at the top. My body shop tells me that the frame is bent beyond repair and the interior of the box is torn & warped. The estimate now is $15,500. State Farm is my insurance and they want to get it fixed and subrogate all the costs to the contra insurance company. But no one wants to talk about diminished value. How do you calculate the diminished value and how do you file for that cost?

Sorry to hear that. My advice to you see a dr ASAP for any little issue in relation to the accident get it all documented. 15 years ago I was t-boned had to sue the guy. I was rushed to hospital neck injury. Stupid dr sided with guys lawyer said I should regain all my faculties. Well 4 weeks ago I had a titanium disk inserted in my neck. I’ve had nothing but issues with my neck since the accident. So don’t settle the claim until you are 100% back to the way you were before the accident.

Good Lord here we go again; yet another thread with crazy diminished value fantasizing. OP you're not gonna see $5k DV, don't believe the hype.

I see someone else says CA is a "no fault" state (not true!)

Please just stop with the misinformation.

I’m speaking from personal experience on being hit in two different vehicles. So it wasn’t fantasy and misinformation.

tell him how to get 5k for that. i'm sure you don't just say i want 5k for diminished value and they will cut you a check.. isn't there some kind of paperwork that needs to be filled out and you need to prove what that diminished value is?

My experience with diminished value is you bring it up and the insurance company claims it was fixed to new so they won't pay. I tried to argue with them and was jerked around for months before I just gave up.

Edit: One thing they did mention is if we traded it and the dealer specifically said they gave us less due to an accident then we could make another claim if it was within 2 years or something like that.

Start shopping for a new one, frame kinked = frame has to be replaced
