I am buying a used low mileage engine from a recycler in PA, I'm located in CA.

According to 49 CFR (blah blah blah) federal motor vehicle anti theft standard there should be a label with the VIN on all the major components

Maybe is just me but I'd say the engine counts as a major component

As Ronald Reagan said "trust but verify"

How do I know the engine I am getting is in fact from the donor vehicle the seller claims it's from?

The local dealer doesn't have a clue how to connect the engine serial number to the VIN (They suggest buy a new truck! "yeah I'm not one of the Astor's")

Usually there is a vehicle VIN placard stamped somewhere on the engine. Hondas use a plate which is stamped on with two rivets on the block. I'm not sure where Toyota puts theirs or their method of stamping it goes.. but it should be on the block somewhere.

Toyota does not usually include a VIN on the engine. The engine has its own serial number.

Free option: Call up a Toyota dealer and give them the VIN and ask them for the engine number.
Paid option: Sign up for TIS and do a vehicle lookup, it will give you the engine number.

If it's for a single vehicle, shoot me a PM and I can check it for you, but it may not be until later.

    WOW WOW WOW THANKS Jeff

I needed the tech info service anyway for doing some of the work installing the engine and other repairs so I ponied up for a month of TIS

The local stealer didn't have a clue (buy a new truck parts and service dept)
