Vents in rear wall

Im doing some noico sound deadening material in stages. Im now on the rear wall and find that the rear vents are incredibly loud. Something that left unchecked would defeat the whole purpose of sound deadening. I completed the doors, both inner and outer shells. I completely sealed the door speakers as to get more thump outta them, and id say it was moderately successful


Now im on the back wall and wondering if anyones got some ideas for the vents




I had some polystyrene laying around so i stuck it in there, but not sure if its a good idea as i dont think it breathes. I know the vents are not in the 2nd gen and the purpose is for pressure equalization as well as something about the defroster. What do you guys got?

The vents are for pressure equalization yes. And they are indeed in the 2nd gen truck. They’re just not as large or in the same spot

I took some foam pipe insulation, opened it up into a "C" shape and glued it above and below the vents so that the "C" shape is over the vents. The sides are still open for air flow. Seemed to cut at least some of the noise while still maintaining the function of the vents.

 

Did it dampen the harmonic differential whine between 50 and 60? I’ve always been suspicious of those vents allowing that noise to sneak in the cab.

Its like driving with the window open. You hear everything

 

just dont plug them! had a pal do that is his ram and when he slammed a door it blew out the window seals LOL

 

You can also place a length of either foam or rubber pipe insulation outside between the bottom edge of the cab and bed, above the front end of the muffler. There’s a horizontal lip or ledge that holds it in place. It may cut down on road noise traveling upward towards the vents.
I’ve had it there for two years without issue.

 

Well i put that polystyrene in, and been driving around. Really helps with the noise and no notice on closing the door.

I think another function of those vents is to balance pressure from the airbags going off in an accident.

 

the main purpose of these vent is to relieve the pressure change when closing the doors and operating the windows while moving.. There can be enough of an instant pressure change that you will feel it in your ears. It also helps with HVAC circulation and air bag deployment.

 

Well i put foam in em, so there is still air flow. The rate is questionable

 

definitely less. You may have to crack your windows when closing the doors. You'll have to see how it is.

Cabin vents save your life:

1-they prevent build up of carbon monoxide if and when your exhaust starts to leak and you are stuck in traffic.

2-they allow you to close the door without the door bouncing back in your face, or blowing your ear drums

3-when your air bags go off, they stop your eyes from being pressed into your brain.

4- they allow you fan to work to defrost the window. A fan cannot blow air into a sealed space. If you plug the vents, your window will fog up, and you’ll probably drive over a cliff.

 

I used some open cell foam, cut the noise a bit and allows air flow.

 

I did sorta stuff the foam in there. I guess my test will be the defroster to see if i have adequate ventilation
