Anyone heard of flashing their transmissions computer to receive different shift points?
have experience doing it? just curious if it’s true and if it works.

Yes. It's a doable thing and has been being done for quite some time as of this year. Hit up @nd4spdbh and he can whip up something for you.

The only caveat is that you will need HPTuners in order to be able to change your tranny tune. So you will have to buy a MPVI2 module and a laptop as well to be able to do all of this.

When I bought my DCSB Sport the transmission was shifting way to soon, took it in under warranty and they re flashed it. No problems since that.

this, the only way you can really change anything with the trans is with some HPTuner love.

@12TRDTacoma and it sooooo worth it. with ND4's trans changes along with JustDSM's engine tune, its like driving a new truck.

I never had an auto transmission lug before- I’m doing 30 on a flat road and it wants to be in overdrive...
@nd4spdbh , will your tune correct this?

    Thanks!

The trans can be tuned to just about however you want it! My trans tune has raised just about every shift point and adjusted torque converter lockup etc.

The stock trans shifts into 5th and locks the converter whenever you are not accelerating so at 30 yes it will so your mpg will be better. As soon as you depress the throttle it downshifts and goes. Program works well unless you want to hold higher rpm shift points then get the tune, but for most of us a waste. When I'm going 30 and floor it trans downshifts instantly and off I go. You can manually control with the shift selector of course. The Gen 3 Tacoma has an ECT mode button to hold higher shift points (basically a second program) which on a test drive only made it feel like a Gen 2.

That’s all well and good but it lugs the engine.

Others might not care but it bugs the hell out of me.

    pretty much.

    Assuming v6 5 speed auto:

Stock shift curves allow the trans to shift from 4th to 5th at 1300 rpms of the rear driveshaft (~31.5mph) at 0-7% accelerator pedal and will apply the torque converter lockup clutch at 1600rpms in 5th gear at 0-12% accelerator pedal (~39mph). Once you are in 5th lockup you can slow down if you stay at low accelerator pedal inputs, till slower than those speeds.

There is also some areas at very low throttle inputs below the 4th and 5th torque converter apply curves called "flex lockup" (including 3rd according to white papers) where the torque converter will partially apply for mpg reasons.

Also the later model 2nd gens had a less linear throttle pedal curve which will make them feel like they are lugging more even though you are pushing on the accelerator pedal more n more.

Anyways, all of this can be tuned and tweaked with hptuners, I am currently on my 12th public revision of my transmission tune which raises all shift points, plays with some downshift points, really changes how the lockup clutch holds, all to make drive ability much better without making a hit on mpgs.

    I appreciate the info.

Got to say nothings easy anymore.

Do you have a Readers Digest post of simplified information or do I have to read through 266 pages?

Haha yeah, i was lucky enough to start in that thread early on and have kept up with it. Id suggest posting in the thread your questions and we can answer them there. Maybe skim though a bit beforehand.

This is why I drive mostly with the truck in 4th gear.

Me too but sometimes I have to drop it to 3rd to avoid lugging...

Maybe nitpicking on terminology but it is nearly impossible to actually lug an AT. The AT shift points and throttle curves can certainly make it feel like you are at too low an RPM but the engine isn’t actually lugging.

What do I call that bogged down lag when I’m doing 30 mph and step on the gas while the engine’s under 800 rpms?

i slugged thru all 266 pages, and it was well worth it. i skipped all of the supercharger talk, as that didnt apply to me, so its really much less than 266 pages. I purchased around page 180 or so. but my truck did the lugg in 5th lockup at low rpms (38-40mph). this was the main reason i purchased, to adjust the TCC unlock values. truck drives so much better with the engine tune and ND4's v12 trans tune, it was well worth the purchase.
