How many original owners of 1st gen?

what do the rest of you all in this thread have for advice for one of your own kind
lately this old truck of mine has been giving me the most problematic issues of maintenance and upkeep
it is supposed to be a holly jolly time of the year and i am so exhausted and near physically tuckered out

 

I was gonna give some good advice but then I saw it was you!!

 

Purchased my 2001 as a Certified Pre-Owned with 20k in 2002. I have 198,600 on it now. I have never missed an oil change and completed all required maintenance along the way. I know the gem I have and would never sell it. I love this truck!

That said, I do need and desire a new full size truck though for our boat and family of 4.

Pre-owned as in titled to someone or something, the dealer, in this example. So, typically you are not getting a “new” Automobile. Could be a few hundred or thousand miles even.
When “Certified”, Toyota would do their vehicle inspection, in and out and then offer it as ‘Certified pre owned’ with a 7 yr 100k warranty, and a price that was close to msrp. The inspection and warranty supposedly justified the higher selling prices.

 

I always figured "Toyota Certified Pre-owned" meant the vehicle passed Toyota's higher standards that a used vehicle should pass and this criteria makes the vehicle "worthy" of being sold on a Toyota lot. Otherwise it gets farmed out to wholesalers.

 

04 Prerunner just shy of 185K. Only regret was not getting the 4 door over the extended cab. Great vehicle and just experienced my first misfire to remedy!

 

Maybe you just need a new truck with a payment of 600.00 a month plus 100 a month insurance and 6 years of payment that has a 100k warranty?

 

Nope, I’d rather maintain my 15 year old truck and invest the $$

 

I wouldn't trade my 21yo truck for anything... last of its breed.

Manual everything. Bare bones base model.

First owner 03 here with 296k
So far one tranny change, one yoke, 2 pw steerings, 3 alternators, 3 sets of headlamps, 4 batteries, all 5k oil change with synthetic M1 since 200k

Now I just need to change my driver side window module, lock, and the bushings in my shifter.
Clear coat on the hood started to fade this Summer.

The Japanese girl is still reliable as my fishing and dd truck to work, 2012 4runner is the family car now but the spouse and I swap from time to time. The wife went on the first date in college with me in this truck in 04 and she wants me to keep it forever. She loves driving a lifted truck in traffic for the benefit of the extended vision over other cars. It's crazy to see the kids seats in the back. She says it brings a smile to her face knowing how I still maintained a safe and functional truck even to this day transporting the kids in it.

My mechanic wants to buy it off me but he is my bestfriend and best man so I might just give it to him when the 6th gen 4runner comes out in 2023 or for a futuristic electric/hybrid Tacoma maybe LOL

 

My stepson Phil test drove my 2000 Pre-Runner TRD Xtra cab before I bought it. Here's my grandson Ethan, son of Phil, digging it out after we got stuck.
Now, almost 20 years and over 340,000 miles later, Ethan told Papa it's gonna be his...now with 3" 5100 lift and AAL in back. The 3rz has a true cold-air intake, installed by grandson with Papas tools; he'll prolly end up with that too.
The Pacesetter header with aluminum collector gasket is original template used to make thier line (I used to live 3 miles from the factory). A 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust ends with a Magnaflow after a flex pipe.
Ethan's brother produced a great grandson. This great grandparent is still happy after all these years...dents and all with prayer.

When I bought mine, the salesman asked "Are you sure that you don't want power windows and power door locks?" I looked at him, reached across to the passenger door, touching the window crank and door lock, and said "Yup."

 

I'm an original owner of a 2001 Tacoma. It has been a daily driver for the last 18 years, bought new in March of 2001 and has 338,200 plus miles on it. 2.7L 4 banger 5 speed all original except for a new radiator and alternator that was installed this year.

 

already I am looking at some payments possibly for a new(er) fuel efficient car to replace one i have

i have 30 years experience with mid west Toyotas
the expected life span here seems to be about 25 years before its time to junk it, like my current 23yr old Corolla is, and the 2 small cars before that from my teens
my Tacoma literally baffles me on its handling and driveability at its age with nothing other than routine preventative maintenance, which the Corolla certainly had as well but is near crapping out for good

if the truck did not drive and handle so well i would not be as concerned about its upkeep, drive it until the wheels fall off, but when exactly does that happen, it seems like limbo (a situation where it seems to be caught between two stages and it is unclear what will happen next.) anymore with everybody's stories on TW it does not seem these trucks are dying out from mechanical issues after 20+ years

that is all i am saying, i had no idea these little trucks can make the 200k 300k or more with not many mechanical issues
i have spent more than six months of DD on TW looking at the horrific effects the elements can wreak in the winter states on these trucks
the cost of equipment and products to preserve it from the elements recently ticked over $1000, which does not include my personal time spent when i can doing mildly dangerous work underneath it, the hours and days keep adding up, taking probably close to 3x longer than a paid professional would take that has the proper equipment already, i am taking my time and not rushing, making sure everything is kosher on my truck

it is not a 'garage queen' that i can just park away and only drive it after all the road chemicals have been fully washed off the roads with the spring rains.

 

I am the original owner of mine. When I test drove it there were 3 miles on it. It was so basic it didn't come with a radio. Now it has 196K. I drove it to Alaska and back, and did a ton of 4 wheeling and snowmobile hauling up there with it. It would start all the way down to -45 F or so w/o being plugged in. It would still crank below that, but I think the fuel would not vaporize enough at those temps for the spark to ignite it. It sat for a total of 3 years in storage when I was overseas. Whenever I came back and put the charged battery in it the thing started up like it hadn't been sitting at all. Now she's enjoying her retirement as a fun vehicle to haul bikes and river tubes on the weekends.

 

Technically I am not the original owner, but...My taco was my work truck for 20 years. When the company decided it was too grungy looking to have their name on, I bought it. 01 Tacoma with 85K miles (obviously I don't drive it that much for work. Our other work vehicle is a 2010 Rav4, with 19K miles on it). Stick shift! Sweet truck.

Bought my 98 brand new right out high school, and still runnin strong! Only has 216k going on 25yrs soon... After I started to return it to former glory with some repairs and paint fixes the wife finally liked having an adventure truck, so started getting the ok on more mods
