Present! Ham is a great asset to have as an adventurous type. I would highly recommend being an active member on some of the repeaters around the state, learn what the intermountain intertie is and how it works, and what aprs is. Ham more so than anything else is a great tool to potentially save you life over just being a trail walkie talkie.

Id be glad to have you over and talk through various aspects to consider in use of ham.

Regardless, Id upgrade your stock antenna to a Nagoya nr771. Cheap as anything and vastly improves your antenna performance

Most people who run CB have there antennae mounted in the wrong spot. I see this on jeeps a lot. They have it mounted on the tire carrier. The antennae just reflects off the back window. Best spots are in the enter of the roof or on the front bumper.

My old neighbor is a CB nut. He has his own base station trailer that he tows to high mtn passes. He then starts the gen set and talks to his buddies across the states.

Thanks for the offer! I think for now I'm good, but down the road I may take you up on it.

I just did some research on APRS and also EchoLink..both are very cool. I had no idea about any of them but I'll definitely look into getting that all setup.

I almost ordered that antenna on Amazon with my radio, but got turned off because some reviews were saying worse or no improvement from the stock UV-5R antenna...so I was skeptical about it. Figured I'd see how the stock ones does and go from there.

My dad has been using Yaesu radios for years. No complaints. Little more than the baofeng but wont crap out after years of use. The larger 12V units can have one of the jumpers removed for more power, but you didnt hear that from me. :anonymous:

I read those ones are good. I figure I'd dabble with a cheap radio first to see how much I use it and get into it before I drop 100+ on a nice radio.

I def notice a difference between the stock antenna and the 771. We use them as a part of staffing some offroad races and I can reach Weatherman on my radio and hear him back, and those around me with the oem ducky antennas just get static.

Yep, always run the antennae where it can actually broadcast and receive, can't do that right next to the body. Either way, my handheld 8 watt with no external antennae blows away any CB setup i've ever wasted money on. Sure it could be better but i dont want to hardwire or permanently mount anything comm related in my 80.

The bad reviews on the antenna probably come from the abundance of knockoffs that are available. Gotta make sure you get a genuine Nagoya, they generally are an improvement over the stock uv5r one.

Check out miklor.com if you haven’t. Lots of great info on the baofengs including programming and antennas.

Where can I be sure I am getting a genuine one? I was looking at Amazon and that's where I saw the bad reviews.

That's a good question. I figure I'd rather not find out, hah. Taking the test seems easy enough...but I've been looking for a place to actually take the exam and there really isn't much options or times to take it around Lehi.
