2.7 serpentine belt tensioner question.

I was going to buy the shorter serp belt to bypass my non functioning AC. Question is Rock Auto lists two idler pulleys, an upper and lower. I see no listing for a tensioner puller, just a complete tenisoner. Two questions, first do I have to even bother replacing the lower pulley as I see in the footnotes it says "with AC" and second is the upper pulley the same as the tensioner pulley or is it a different part number? Unless I missed something that thread has the part number for the shorter belt, but I don't see where it mentions part numbers for the pulleys, and weather the tensioner pulley is the same part as the idler pulley.

Excellent, thank you for the information! In reading about the tensioner pulley it seems that on the 4.0 engines folks are buying a Nachi 5203-2NS bearing and just pressing a new bearing into the pulley to save buying the whole tensioner. Will that bearing work on the four cylider models? Does the four cylinder have the same tensioner pulley as a V6 I wonder?

 

You do not have to buy the entire tensioner assembly for the 2.7L- you can buy only the tensioner pulley from Toyota. IIRC, it is a little hard to find in the parts manual though as the two idler pulleys are listed with the belt and the tensioner pulley is listed in with the timing cover or similar. But I'm 100% sure it's available as I bought all the pulleys from Toyota and not the tensioner. If you can't find it, just pick up the phone.

Could always pop the bearing out and bring it to a local industrial parts supply house. 90% of the time theres such a store near your local industrial/manufacturing district.

 

So I have not had a chance to pull it apart yet, but called my local dealer. According to the guy at the parts counter the tensioner pulley is available separately of the tensioner assembly. The Toyota part number for the tensioner pulley is

$50 16603-75010 Belt Tensioner Pulley

16603-75010 and I had him match that part number using the last eight of the VIN so hopefully it'll be a good match. He quoted me $28 and change for the pulley, and it's a day away out of the Boston warehouse, so I had him order it and at some point I'll give it a try.

I'm probably going to see if I can take the information I found online for the bearing cross reference and see if I can find just the bearing locally so I have a spare with the old pulley if I ever need it.

just a heads up the bolt on the 2.7l tensioner is a lefty loosey, NOT like the tensioner pulley v6 4.0 which is reverse threaded bolt righty loosey
