2019 TRD Sport or 2017 TRD Offroad?

What's up everyone. Brand new here and I have a few questions and would just like your opinions. I bought a 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 for $35,000 out the door 3 weeks ago. The deal was great and i'm in love with the truck, but as soon as I left and did more research I realized the off-road has more capability; and also rides smoother. I'm strongly considering going back and trading the sport in for a 2017 off-road with maybe 15,000 or so miles. My questions are:

Will the sport be enough for my hunting in deep woods, camping, and some offroading in mud?(buying maxtrax)

Would it be worth it to keep the sport and just put a ARB rear locker on it?

or

Should I just go trade the sport in for a 2017 with crawl control and an elocker?

Installing an air locker in the rear and some TRD Offroad suspension take-offs will be cheaper than the hit you'll take trading in and you can engage the rear locker whenever you want unlike the stock Toyota E-locker and upgrade the gearing while you have the diff open.
Crawl control is one thing you cannot install aftermarket though so that's up to you

And yes the any trim with 4x4 will be enough for hunting camping and some offroading especially with maxtrax etc

 

Keep the sport and upgrade, you will lose your shirt on a trade, they'll probably offer you $28K for your '19 sport.

 

The sport is more than capable, Ive owned a few of both, you’d be silly to throw money away trading in for a used off-road and basically the same truck. I’ve mudded and played in sand pits in NJ with both my sports and even a Prerunner at one point. And ask me how many times I ever used crawl control or the locking diff on my off roads...don’t buy into the sheep hype mentality here that you NEED an OR because you don’t. Throw on a good set of tires and you’ll be fine and by the way the sport actually has the better ride on road.

Sport is capable. You can buy an aftermarket locker. Heck I'll even sell you the shocks that came off my 17 trd off road they have 15k miles.

 

The crawl control is over rated, and the e-locker takes forever to engage.

Work your way up to the offroading purchases slowly. See what you need and work away at it.

 

- Keep your truck, good deal.
- Get a winch, you want one either way.
- Keep good recovery gear with you.
- Lift it one day.

After a few trips, I'd be surprised if you felt the need to even add a locker. Some good tires is all you need.


If you're tinkerer, and Iater feel the need to add doodads, like a lift/tires, you can add a locker at the same time you regear, to save money on labor.

 

So we're not even gonna talk about the SKEWP? But seriously, I've never had a problem getting to any of my fishing/hunting spots with my sport... And I dont even have fancy tires yet as these ones simply will not wear down.

 

Off road has more than just the rear locker. It has the much stronger rear 8.75” differential as well as electronic assisted brake booster. It also has multi terrain select which is a great system. Although I couldn’t justify trading it back in for a used off road you could keep your eye open for a rear axle off a wretched off road and pick it up and swap it in.

 

Unless they are willing to completely buy out your loan or give you 100% of what you paid...trading it in will be a bloodbath.

Also ANY 4wd with a good set of tires will do what you are asking. So yes your sport is fine.

 

If sport is MT it also has 8.75" rear diff.

 

It's a subjective opinion, but I believe this is totally false. I test drove a Sport and felt every crack in the road.

I may not use either of these things often, but when I do...they are FAR from overrated! When you really want to try tackling some tough off-roading obstacles, that crawl and locker will leave the Sport behind in a hurry. And I'll be glad I have those features if I ever need them in a real-world pinch.

 

Get a real 12v portable compressor (nothing that plugs in a cigarette lighter plug) and tire gauge. Airing down will get you out of most situations.

 

Depending on is this a daily driver. I drive 130 miles per day. It’s a way stiffer suspension than the off road. Yes every bump is felt. I get 23.1 mpg and I drive 80mph on flat ground. I hit some fire roads and drive it on my buddies farm sometimes (mud pit). It does fine. I drove the stock tires till 50k and bought A/T tires. Snow with part time 4wd in Wisconsin and never had a issue.

 

What color is your truck? If you want it to look more off-road like, I have a 2019 super white that i would reluctantly trade hoods with you. Just throwing that out there.

 

Of course it is but from a design standpoint Toyota designed and gave the sport said suspension for performance on road as opposed to the OR which was tuned for off road. I've had both a few times over. The off road tends to be really mushy and rolls like crazy in corners, the sport is opposite and much more planted on road. Again everyone's opinion will differ but Toyota gave each said suspension for a said reason.
