Reviving a VERY old thread to ask a basic question: anyone out there recommend any particular style log book for recording maintenance? Was searching online, just curious if there are any recommendations.

I use an app on my phone called Fuelly. I keep all maintenance records in the app, which is backed up to the cloud. I used to track fuel mileage with the app too, but lost interest in knowing that information. You can keep track of multiple vehicles (my wife's car) and set mileage and time based reminders. I think you can even attach images to maintenance records, but I don't do that. Only thing I wished it did was connect to a Bluetooth obdii reader to automatically pull in the mileage and proactivly remind you about upcoming maintenance. Without that feature, you can just enter the current mileage and have a look at the distance /time to upcoming maintenance items.

I believe Toyota owners website had a spot to log them. Couldn’t tell you where on the website as it’s been a couple years since I’ve owned a Toyota.

Appreciate you guys offering the digital solutions, but I’d like to buy an old-fashioned physical logbook where I can write in the entries. I picture being able to hand that to a prospective buyer far down the road. Also, I take a lot of pleasure in doing as much maintenance as possible myself, and what’s missing in the ritual is a logbook. I’ve got the dates and mileage noted down from what I’ve done so far, time to transfer it into one place.

I don't save receipts but I do record everything. I plan on keeping my vehicles for a long time so the records are just for me so I know when the next service for that particular item is due.
You could just buy a ledger book or small notebook and keep it in your glove box.

This is what I use. There's an iPhone app as well.

Hear you on doing your own maintenance, enjoy it too. Understand your looking for a paper based solution, but just so you know you can export maintenance history too from most apps, if you ever wanted to share it.

You’ve got me curious enough to check out the app. I’ve been on the site of course but only to check dealer service history. Never knew you could log your own there.

Can you export from Fuelly? I used it initially to see what my gas mileage was like...it was always a pretty consistent 19mpg, so I stopped using it and eventually deleted the app.

Here's an export example of the maintenance.... you can export fuel mileage too. Adding pictures and copies of invoices, which can be done (but I don't) would be pretty powerful for a potential future buyer.

I wasn't aware Toyota had their own app. Fuelly isn't perfect and there are other similar apps, but personally I'd prefer to use an app built by an independent party. Just a personal preference. Screenshot_20191226-222618_Chrome.jpg

That’s cool. Still prefer a book, that’s just me. It’s more personal that way.

Would be pretty cool to get previous maintenance history hand written on paper if you bought a vechile.

My neighbour (since passed away) gave me his old snow blower when he bought himself a replacement. Along with the snow blower he gave me some spare parts and hand written notes of previous repairs he had made. It's one of the reasons I keep putting the effort into keeping that machine going instead of scraping it.

I use fuelly for the mpg tracking.... but excel for maintenance logs on the truck, I take a before and after video of every oil change that i put into a folder with named with the miles that relate to the oil change within a "video logs" folder.

reason I do excel is i keep the same format for all the other vehicles (4 motorcycles, gfs car and jetski) so its MUCH easier that way to keep things organized.

Did you buy a log book or just do it on a pad of paper?

I keep meticulous maintenance records on ALL my vehicles. Save all receipts for major items purchased and any maintenance that I do not do myself. Also, for my Tacoma (since I started doing my own maint) I scan a copy of the owners manual page of required maintenance due per mileage/months and keep that info in a large folder. Pretty easy that simplifies your records for review or when selling vehicle. I've found private buyers appreciate records that prove you maintained vehicle.

I keep records in a file folder and log maintenance on the folder itself, starting on the cover then inside fold, etc.
