The window was a good hike! I would recommending going early so the sun is hitting you too bad. there is no shade. If you want some good food head to Starlight Theatre in Terlingua right out side of the park!

Hopefully others respond since I didn't really do any of the high clearance roads other than the one short one (forget the name) that goes from the west entrance to elena canyon. from what I have seen it seems like any designed trail you'd likely be fine with 2WD. I watched a few videos and it seemed like even the worst part of black gap was just a smallish step up some rocks. but again, I didn't do the trails, spent the whole time hiking so hopefully others will comment. when i searched youtube for black gap and old ore road there were a couple videos showing them.

the videos made it look very easy compared to some of the trails ive done in the black hills in south dakota.

or you can always ask the rangers at panther junction.

I did Black Gap, and the 4x4 high clearance requirements are not really necessary, unless there's been recent storms. You couldn't take a car and street tires wouldn't cut it, but a stock 4x4 with all-terrains could do it no problem, I was stock with 265/75r16 KO Begs and had no issues.

When we went late last year didn't need one, just need to call ahead of time to reserve your time. They allow two runs a day, no more then 4 vehicles, so they say but there have been pics of more then that. One first thing in the morning and one at noon, basically have a 4 hour window, can make the climb in about 45 min if you don't stop for pics.

Hey! Love the thread, I'm interested in doing Black Gap, do you guys think I'd need a 4x4 or is 2WD/RWD fine? This would be with a 04' TRD! I've always wanted to go to Big Bend- my dad went out there once and said it was beautiful!

    Short answer: it depends.
If the weather cooperates and everything is dry, you’ll probably be fine.
If it’s wet or has been rutted out recently, there are a couple of spots 4wd would be needed.

You could do many of the other roads with just 2wd, though. BiBe is still beautiful in 2wd.

I did Black Gap in Thanksgiving 2019. At the Gap, there's no bypass and you would need 4x4, unless you go with a 4x4 which can rope you up. All other places had easy bypasses.

My last trip to Big Bend was Fall 2019. My 24 yr old son and I headed up for a week of camping and hiking. Had a blast. Day 4 we hiked the south rim trail, all 14 miles. We were pretty worn out at the end of the day as we had hiked several of the shorter trails the previous 3 days. Day 5 we were pretty much worthless and just drove around the park and dinked around. If you get there in the hotter parts of the year I would recommend planning on camping up in the Chisos basin. We were seeing as much as a 20 degree temp change from down low to up top in the basin. Sleeping at night when the temps are in the 50's-60's is so much better than sleeping down in the lower elevations where it is so hot and muggy at night.
