I'm not sure if it's the same in every vehicle with apple carplay, but I know I'm some of the new dodges you can only use carplay if you plug in with the cable. I suppose the idea is to keep your phone charge.

Carplay can be wireless on certain head units, but usually it is wired. Wireless carplay comes at a steep price.

No way to do it on the factory head unit unfortunately. There are only a select few aftermarket radios that offer it (and I think a few new Mercedes.) There is additional wifi hardware that has to be built in so no way to add it later.

wireless CarPlay is just starting to show up, but unfortunately hasn't made it to our tacomas yet. So in our 2020s you have to plug in the wire. However, I found that sound quality through CarPlay to be very bad. The rear speakers are cut off entirely, and the sound is very flat. try it and please report back if you find the same thing.

There are wireless CarPlay modules you can get from China. I tried two different ones on the 2020 Tacoma and they were garbage and didn’t work. Returned one through Amazon and it took filing a claim with my credit card to get a refund on the second.

One was carlinkit or something, the other was carplay 2 air.

Wireless carplay is definitely out there. My 2019 BMW M2 has this feature and its pretty neat not to have to deal with any cables.

Double Toyota will have that anytime soon unfortunately.

No issues with mine and like prior experience with my last vehicle, there is a slight bump in quality with CarPlay over Bluetooth as that is just the nature of Bluetooth.

Wireless CarPlay is great! I use it in a rental BMW not long ago and it worked flawlessly. We just installed a Pioneer AVH-W4500NEX in our 2018 Tacoma and it seems to be working great, as well. It's nice because you don't even need to take your phone out to plug in or anything for short trips and we just put it on the Qi charger for longer trips because I'm pretty sure the battery is going to go quicker using wireless CarPlay.

Sold my Pioneer unit that was wired CarPlay for a newer Kenwood that is wireless. LOVE IT!!! First world problems oh "having" to plug your phone in to hear music but the convenience factor is worth the money in my mind.
