I am completely new to overlanding and currently reading as much as I can. I plan to purchase a 2020 Tachoma and use it for my daily commute (less than 10k miles per year) and get started with overlanding. My current interest in overlanding is purely around camping off road.

My question is, when you start getting into upgrades from stock which upgrades really hurt your daily commute? Wether that be comfort, gas mileage, or noise?

As an example if I purchased something like Cooper ST max tires, if they are aired properly for daily commute how much does that impact it?

Are there upgrades you’d avoid or upgrades that are a must?

Take the truck out and see what it needs.

Tires are usually a very powerful option. Of course more meat means more rolling resistance and a slight reduction in mpg. After that it's all in what YOU want. Rough trails? Get some armor, sliders etc. Can't pass them due to bottoming out, lift. Want camping luxuries, get a rack, roof top tent, etc.

Everything you do will add weight and decrease mpgs.

Avoid all "upgrades" and just go camping instead. Buy a nice sleeping bag and pad. Put some firewood in the bed. And a bottle of bourbon in a cooler. Stay on the trail and out of rivers/streams. Take a few close friends with you. Don't throw the empty bottle in the fire pit. Be a good steward of the environment and make memories that build character and foster good feelings.

If you go camping more than 3x per year, it's a hobby and you will know exactly what you need. Otherwise, struggle a bit, you'll survive and remember it more

    That's my opinion.

It’s your truck. If you want to customize it and add all sorts of modifications, go for it. If you want to keep it bone stock , that’s cool also. You do you. Welcome to TacomaWorld

Just understand that upgrading to make this truck over-landing ready could render it impractical for daily driver use
