Did you ever figure this out? How to get it apart, and back together

 

You don't take it apart at the 7-pin. You need to disconnect the rather overly complicated harness connection up behind the bumper. You'll see an unusual large white clip-looking thing. Do not try to pry that open. Instead, to the right (inboard) edge of that, is a tiny little double-pronged black clip release. It's a little fiddly and tiny, but pinch the prongs together, and that allows the big white clip to pop open, which allows the harness to be separated.

You'll need to cut a little tape on the split loom too to free the whole 7-pin pigtail.

 

I did this mod today. Took pictures of the connection.

 

Pretty easy Mod, just don’t slip with the hole saw!! I had everything laying around so just dove in. I’ll switch the hardware to SS at some point. Other than that turned out well!

 

Since both my utility trailer as well as my 6x12 enclosed are 4 flat so I was looking for a 'box' I could mount that had both 4/7. But now I think I am going to take the easer route and just zip tie the factory connector up out of the way and route a extension that goes from the factory 7 to a flat 4. Probably route it through the bumper behind the plate;

I had to enlarge the hole for the driver side license plate light just a little bit (dremel tool w an abrasive disc), but I think this is a pretty clean install. IMO, it more closely matches the passenger side license plate light housing (because the mounting tabs are hidden behind the bumper's sheet metal). If I had to do it over again, I would have created a template for the hole to more closely match the receptacle's shape, rather than a simple rectangle.

 

Just buggered up my harness end. The connector is fine and works, but obviously need to replace it. I want am also getting a new bumper since can't seem to find a used one anywhere and will likely integrate the connector it into the bumper this time. So now my question is, if possible, where can I get just the connector end with the cap?

I only have four flat on both of my trailers and always have to run an adapter. I was thinking of replacing it with a connector that has both the 4 flat as well as the round 7 pin.

I still have to move mine so I don't do the same thing.

 

Not sure why I didn't see this before but I actually just now found this on Amazon that might work, even for you. It has the 4 way flat to 7 round. I wounder if those could just be connected to the existing wiring then could have both 7 round and the 4 straight?

Oh btw, this might help some who were wondering about the law regarding license plate lights. At least for Utah, this is what is said. I underlined what to me sounds like only 1 light is necessary as long as it lights it up enough to see from 50 ft away. If you buy a LED light to put into the one side, it will light it up plenty. Once I get my replacement bumper and multi-tow adapter installed, I will post before and after pictures.

70 (5) (a) Either a tail light or a separate light shall be constructed and placed to illuminate
71 with a white light the rear license plate and render it legible from a distance of 50 feet to the
72 rear.
73 (b) A light described in Subsection (5)(a) illuminating a rear license plate shall be
74 wired to be lighted whenever the headlights or auxiliary driving lights are lighted.

 

You are correct, only 1 light is required. The second is there for assurance. Furthermore pulling someone over for a light out has always just been a way to get them on the side of the road. At least it always was for me.

@Rick_Taco - I have been watching "Live PD Police Patrol" and you are correct. They pull you over for one thing and then some pull the, I smell "Alcohol" or "Weed" which then gives them probable cause to detain you and search your vehicle. I personally wouldn't have any issues since I don't do either but I decided that I will drill into the bumper and create a separate location for the harness adapter. Doesn't seem to hard and gives that extra assurance as you mentioned.

I will wait patiently and see if you are able to just plug the Toyota harness into the new connector .

it’s pretty easy. About 10 minutes and a 2” hole saw. Let us know how your set up works out. Everything I pull uses the old rectangle adapter. I keep an adapter in the truck at all times.

if I did it again, I would have installed a license plate hinge and hid it behind there.
