Good point. Those dumb “dig yourself out of a sand ramp” demos is the best they came up with for marketing the system on a Tacoma, but they are also BS.

My suspicion: the Americans in charge of implementing Crawl Control in the Tacoma did not fully understand it themselves. Somehow it’s use was lost in translation when they brought it over from the Japanese Landcruiser line.

    Coles notes:

Crawl Control does not create magic traction in mud, sand, or on ice, or unstick a stuck truck.

Crawl Control does apply brakes and throttle simultaneously, which allows very safe and controlled movement up or down very steep terrain, in forward or reverse, where your tires still have some traction.

Crap tires for off road and wet clay. Can't stop when you have both of those and gravity fighting you, you need to run and gun at a speed where you don't cause damage to your vehicle.

OP was doing fine up that hill until he stopped and tried to play with the multi terrain select button. Once he lost all momentum, there was no way to get it back with mud caked all over his tires. Putting the rocks in front of the tires didn't help because the tires had to get up onto them to get traction. If he had a shovel, he could have better placed those rocks to gain needed traction.
I do remember the video of the sand trap, but I also remember tfl, I think did a piece on it. They were climbing some loose rocky trail and got it stuck, but also admitted they maybe on something more than the truck could handle to begin with.

Bouncing it off the 2 step rev limiter is a must for mud !!

I’ve shared this video before, but I think it is the best demo of the power of the Toyota Crawl Control system, with the truck doing something that might be impossible, or unsafe otherwise, or would require a shitload of throttle. Especially with a Landcruiser on street tires.

This video was amazing. I sat back and laughed...not at you, but the situation that most of us have all been in one time or another. The look on your face when you got after it and made it up the muddy hill....priceless.

Buying new tires, even more aggressive tires on a daily driver sometimes isn't practical. Sooooooo....check this out:

Buy two sets for the rear tires. These work well. I almost had to put mine on this past weekend towing in the mud.

I tow a lot off the pavement, but there is no way in hell I'm putting tires that howl and ride like crap. If tires are an option for you, but don't want something to aggressive, check out the Cooper AT3 XLT. I am amazed at how quiet these tires are, and how well they work in snow and the mud.

    tire.jpg

This was on my property picking up the trailer in the back. Normally if it's a mud or snow, we hook to the tractor and pull it out front. Now since my inner 10 year old came out, hell yes I want to test out the new tires. I had no wheel spin and still pulled the trailer out of mud and snow.

In mud and snow, a bit of momentum really helps (like others have said). Wheel spin helps open up the voids in the tires for traction instead of a caked up mess like in your video.

If you could do me a solid, change the title of the YouTube video. Crawl control is not for muddy situations. I was personally shocked the truck got you up that far with all the mud and slow speed.

Live and learn. You need to drive them to learn how they work.
I've taken rental 2wd SUVs thru those dirt roads and much steeper ones too ha ha.
In many really back country and mountain areas seen lots of old beater cars driving along the 4wd roads - always a hoot.
Best selection on a TRD off road is 4lo with the e-locker engaged and push it up don't stop. All computer controls off.
Always try to stay on the uphill side starting so as you slide you won't drop off the road edge.
    Keep exploring!

    Crawl control did not work.
    4LO did.
    Same tires.
Good thing he doesn’t have the off-road model that has CC and no 4x4.

Wife instinctively knows momentum is your friend. I never really studied crawl, as I have a MT. But nothing about the little I have read said that would be the situation.

Snow, mud, wet, slippery.............TIRES. The rest just makes life easier. 4LO for sure. The straight bits I would have tried my front and rear lockers, not that the front locker required on that little hill, but again see.......we have the tools we want to use them.

    This was something..
First. Where was the mud? Was he talking about that little bit of wet dirt road??

Second. I’m wondering if he knew “full send it” would work and he was just trying CC for the wife?

Anyways. Yeah good for OP for getting past that “mud”.

I'll give him this though. At least he was in a spot he could back down and use some momentum. At least he wasnt in a spot where he tried to use CC and stopping ect and got actually stuck, vs backing down and using some pedal to get it going. Not bad the first go though all seasons probably not aired down. Made it further than I thought

There are times when finesse is needed, and times where brute power gets you through. It took a while, but the OP finally figured it out.

I need YouTube clicks this is my side hustle, it's how I make the truck payment, stay tuned for Yeti Cooler vs. Foam cooler and how my Bud Lights stayed cool at Glamis why the baloney sandwiches stayed dry. The following weeks video will be on how I broke my leg trying to kick start Chad's LT500 Quad-zilla and how Suzuki is at fault
