Gen 1 Tacoma struts

This is my first post, I’m not sure if this is how I ask questions on here. I recently moved my belstein 5100s with the stock coils from my 2001 prerunner 2.7 liter onto my new “to me” 2004 4wd trd off road 3.4. It lifted the truck a lot less than my previous one, I’m guessing it’s due to the increased weight of the front diff and the bigger engine. What should I replace the coils with to get about an inch of lift. I’m worried about going too big on the springs, I don’t want my truck squatting.

 

Hey Jose. So you moved Prerunner springs to the 4x4? First I'd recommend using the original OEM (I assume ) 4x4 coils with your Bilsteins, and seeing how that does. The OEM coils form the Prerunner and the 4x4 will have different ratings.

Actually, also wondering how many miles all these coils have on them. From the factory, they are progressive, which means the top part of the coil is a bit softer and does tend to collapse over time before the lower coils. I'd look at both trucks first to see if the coils look collapsed (minimal gap between each coil). Posting pics for us would help too. With high mileage and that amount of labor, it may be time to replace them on either set of coilovers.

 

The shocks that came on the new truck were junky no name coils and shocks. I looked for some oem 4x4 coils online, they are more expensive than the aftermarket ones. Is there any aftermarket options that would be the same height as oem.

 

The old truck had 150k miles and the new one has 170k

 

Do you already have the clip on the 5100s set at the highest position? Looks like it in the picture. Check the Wheelers website for coils. You should be able to get coils that will give you small lift even with the 5100s set at the lowest position.

 

If you only want an inch of lift, I would think the OME 2880 would be a good choice. Low range offroad says it provides 1.25 to 1.5" of lift. I'd also considering running those 5100s on the lowest adjustable setting.

I’d honestly recommend getting new coils, stock or otherwise. For starters, you’ve taken coils from a prerunner and put them on a 4x4, and those springs will have a lower spring rate that the 4x4 springs. Second, you took springs from a 2.7 truck and put them on a 3.4 truck. A v6 is heavier than a 4 cylinder, so the factory springs off the 4 cylinder truck will have a lower spring rate, and won’t support the weight as well. If you’re looking for an affordable option try and find a set of stock v6 coils from a junkyard, or maybe check out moog replacement coils. I put a set of moog coils in the rear of my wife’s 4Runner and they’ve been great. Here’s the link for moog OEM replacement fronts, v6 with off road package

I am also looking for new struts. I think I need the whole assembly? I’ve got a 2003 V6 4x4. Don’t need any lift. What do people recommend?
