TRD Performance Brake Pads=Brake Dust Hell

Did the front brakes with OEM cryo rotors paired with the TRD brake pads. Good God man do these pads make a ton of brake dust! Everyone have similar experiences? My front wheels were completely black after a month. Trying out the rim shield from sonax to see if it helps. Anyone know of another good pad with low dusting?

 

Yes sir. I washed my wheels a week ago and since then it has accumulated a bunch already.

 

That’s the price you pay for a performance brake pad. Just like tires: better grip = faster wear. I went through a bunch of different pads but came back to standard OEM pads for the best balance between performance/wear/life of the pads.

 

Ah yes, the famous compromise with "high performance" brake pads. Yes, you will get greater stopping power. But generally speaking, the price you pay for pads that grip the rotors harder is a softer pad. That softer pad will get eaten up by the rotor faster and thus you'll have more dust. I tried TRD pads in my daily driver Scion xB a while back and the increased stopping power was immediately obvious. And within a couple of days the brake dust buildup on my front wheels was just awful. I pulled them out and went back to OEM (non-TRD) pads.

The best compromise between "better braking performance" and "without a ton of dust" I've found so far are Ceramic or Ceramic Hybrid pads. But some Ceramic pads have been known to be kind of rough on rotors. Oh well.

BTW: None of the so called "wheel waxes" do much of anything to prevent the buildup.

 

jup those will also eat your rotors down, thats why im always using ceramic pads from now on, AKEBONO pro act 976 nada spot of dust and sweet on the rotors

 

Are the Akebonos quiet? I see them on Rock Auto so I'll probably switch them out next time I do a tire rotation. Any other good pad recs?

Those steps don't prevent anything, the purpose (regardless of the ads) is to really let the wheel clean easier.

Collinite 845) will do the same.

Almost any pad that advertises being 'performance' will do this. Another problem is that this type compound is great for initial bite, and will be better on cold brakes as well. Which can be useful in city driving. However, they may not perform well under heavy extended braking like mountain running or towing, and might find a greater tendency to fade when hot. You'll see folks who run simple competition like autocross change pad types based on the course layout (fast vs technical), if the event will be hot lapped or they have to run cold, or even the weather.

So, like most stuff automotive, everything is a compromise. Consider picking the right pad for 90% of your driving style. For most folks OE pads are just fine.

If a soft, high bite pad fits that bill, dust is your new life.

 

Might have to look into these. I'll be throwing new pads on sometime this winter I suspect

 

they are the same as Toyota 04465-AZ001-TM which have been discontinued but still available online these are what im running, its the same pad as proact 976 ones

Noticed NAPA shows two different 976s...one $20 cheaper. I'll have to look into the difference

Not going to disagree with the intent of the products, but I do contest the actual performance. Carnauba wax degrades quickly with heat - which is available in large quantities in a wheel from brake heat. Said another way, heat from the brakes will break down any conventional wax in short order, rendering it useless. If you really want to make removing brake dust from your wheels easy, go with a ceramic coating.

 

the regular ones are fine for everyday use, man I get zero dust,and they last and last, and are easy on the rotors. I checked my rotor thickness im at 27.88mm rotors(original) come new at 28mm, and im at almost 120k miles changed out my OEM pads at 49k miles

 

one thing for sho is that those TRD pads are dust monsters youll be cleaning them rims every other day, although they do bite very good but they will eat the rotors up, I had them on another truck

 

Agreed. And one thing nobody has mentioned is how abrasive brake dust is to a wheel finish. When I was driving F-150's, my 2005 F-150 had the very typical heavy brake dust. (They tried using aggressive pads to make up for the fact that they undersized the brakes to save money.) Anyway, the dusting was horrible and looked like crap on my nice, shiny chrome plated aftermarket 20" wheels. Constantly washing them to get the brake dust off eventually did a real number on the chrome plating by leaving fine scratches all over them. Ugh!

Semi agree. Modified my post to specify 'long lasting' and gave a product example. No carnauba is long lasting.

Regarding heat, my hand tells me the surface of my paint is hotter than the finish of the wheels after a normal drive. And yes, my hand is calibrated.
