Yea that's true. My understanding is as the undercoating gets older it will get stiffer and crack in places instead of being malleable. But that's just going off some stuff I read. Didn't look into too much since it seems popular opinion here is to fluid film. Hopefully I dont regret not doing the undercoat :fingerscrossed:

i am still on the fence about the fluid film, i would really like to see it up close on something first lol

you are probably right about the undercoating getting older and stiffer, but not sure if the new and modern way of doing it is ?different/better? than what i had done to my truck 22yrs ago. I have spots where the coating is still on my frame and undercarriage and other spots where it has worn off, most likely from the regular spray downs at the outside carwash in the winters. I did have to get my lower fuel shield sanded and powdercoated, it had a lot of crusty on it plus it had remnants of the rubbery overspray on it still

but I am definitely in need of a good frame cleaning and re-painting with some top quality stuff, I still am researching what is the best products and methods. Most likely have to do this myself, which involves removing the bed of which I have no clue how to do by myself. I checked a few local shops for quotes but I do not trust them to do what it needs properly and definitely not at their quoted price of $800~$1500 which does not include removing the bed and/or sandblasting to remove the little crusty surface spots that have developed. They just want to use some POR stuff and some other black underspray over everything, I did not care for the examples of other trucks they had just sprayed that stuff all over.

Yea I haven't fluid filmed yet so not sure about it either. My 2017 looks good underneath and I do pretty religiously wash it once a week. But I do want to take some kinda measure to keep it nice

for some weird reason NE IA MO SD are not considered 'cold climate' states

yet MN WI and IL are

FF goes on greasy and oily. As it dries it get a bit waxy. It washes off with time. It's really easy to spray on and doesn't hurt anything. It's a really good protection from salt if you clean well in the spring and reapply in the fall.

i am thinking it might be easy to just wash right off at the outside carwash during the winters and its gone. I suppose there is only one way to find out, put some on and then back to winter hosing routine around the wheel wells and whatever underneath is reachable

I just thought a very nice primer/paint (chip resistant as possible) would eliminate some of the extra 'work' and hassles of continuous reapplication

It takes some real work to wash off. Similar to wax on paint. It won't simply rinse off but it won't last forever either. Although, salt and alike rinse off easier... At least that's been my experience.

For those wanting to do a Fluid Film party before winter I won't be able to participate this year. My truck is in storage is not coming out anytime soon... Maybe next year.

do you put the FF inside the rear bumper? especially the areas underneath the license plate
i have some cans on order and that is where i am starting, since bumper is newish
the rest of the areas i have to figure if its a good idea or not to apply the product yet until project is finished

Yes, I coat the inside of my bumpers. Spraying behind the license plate won't hurt either. I coat everything underneath my truck except the exhaust.

    how about inside the tailgate?

i had a Line-X job done this summer to 'cure' the surface corrosion that was starting from the plastic bedliner rub but the tailgate is somewhat exposed to roadspray and whatever melts from the bed and drains out the back (i had them plug the front drain holes so i would not have to necessarily worry about that)

if there was an FF party i would definitely drive all the way across Iowa lol, nothing much going on this side of Western Iowa

Inside the tailgate is fine too. ...Anywhere road salt and/or moisture could get trapped...

what do you think about FF right here in this spot, how durable is it against rain? this other product i was trying that i thought might stick better just washed right on off after 2 inches of rain last week drained through the door channel or wherever the heck it goes IDK
i heavily applied this gel, even inside the door panel through the drain holes
i had a small rust spot show up in one of these soft spots late last year and just want to protect this area more, other than washing the roadspray off of my truck, which i just ordered an interesting product from TX that i am anxious to try out to wash it cleaner, will see how that stuff goes!

In my experience FF lasts similar to a good wax job. A bit of rain or a light wash doesn't effect it much but will take it off eventually.
