I went outside to get something from my altima and heard a sound from the truck. Truck hasn’t been started today other than one time earlier today around 11:00 when my wife drove it to run a quick errand. Anyone know why the sound could be coming from the truck? Was thinking it’s the fuel pump running possibly but can’t understand why it would be running for no reason just sitting there. I have a video of it if it will help but just seemed odd as I’ve never heard that before since owning the truck.

The fuel pump runs after about 5 hours of being parked. I don't remember why but they all do it.

Ok thanks. Perfect timing then because it’s been 5 hours since it was last ran. Would have never known it happens without needing something out of my car at the exact time!

Grab your owner's manual, it's in there.
Normal operation.. some evap emissions test the truck runs.

I’m glad I read my manual about this. It freaked me out at night while camping in Moab:)

Wife heard our truck doing that shortly after we bought it. It is something to do with smog equipment. 5 hours after truck is off it pulls a vacuum on something, I think the fuel tank, but not sure. I went searching after she recorded the sound.

No the fuel pump does not run. It is the evap system to clear fumes. Read the manual please.

Exactly where is it? Because I did. Searching for ‘fuel pump’ or ‘emissions’ gives zero bits of useful info pertaining to the running of the fuel pump 5 hours later. Without knowing that exists nobody would even have a clue what to search for outside of fuel or fuel pump or fuel pump shutoff or similar. None of those searches in the manual give any info which is why I posted here.

Nevermind I found it. To the guy saying read the manual, go away if you can’t be helpful. I can understand if someone was asking what type oil the engine needed or what a certain dash light meant but this one is quite confusing unless you already knew what it was. People like you make me wish there was a way to auto post to your topics ‘read the manual’ every time.

By the way, evaporation was the key word that helped me find it. Emissions search nor fuel pump didn’t help which is what I thought it was.

Nah man, don't sweat the RTFM crowd. Life is too short. Why they don't just move on is actually the question. Meh, trolls.

Yeah, there are many of the know it all types that immediately jump to the read the manual response. If they don't like the question, they should move the F along without a response.

Never have I heard of such a strange thing on a vehicle. A pump that automatically runs after the engine is off. Really... That is odd and who would even think it is something to be found in the manual.
