My 1998 4 Cyl wont start. I have been driving around with my check engine light on for a while now. Also, when starting in the morning i have been having to hold down the gas peddle for awhile or else it would sputter out and die and then not start again unless i waited several minutes. A few hours ago I tried starting it cold and it sputtered out and then never restarted. It turns over but doesn't ignite. I ran the codes from the check engine light and came back with a misfire on cylinders 3 and 4 and random misfires. I have recently replaced the spark plugs and I am now about to replace the wires. Its 7 PM and I have an important meeting in the morning so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm assuming your battery is in decent shape? Besides fuel, and battery, it could be fuel not reaching injectors properly due to clogged filter or lines and or defective fuel pump. If you have a distributor cap, check and clean it up. (Same if ignition coils) Also, being able to check cylinder compression would be helpful for ruling out, if you have means to do so on quick notice.

These kinds of problems aren't easy to pin down without some time and some tools. I would start looking for another ride to the meeting.

Beyond that, my first inclination is a lack of fuel pressure.

So I noticed I cannot hear the fuel pump turning on when the key is in the on position. Could it be the fuel pump relay? Is that the same as the EFI relay in the fuse box under the hood?

Yeah you can check the EFI relay and fuse, but if the symptoms have been building for a while and you've got misfire codes on the back cylinders, I suspect something else is amiss.

If you did not hear the fuel pump operate then you can inspect the EFI 15amp fuse and the ignition switch 30amp fuse. You can then check the EFI main relay and circuit opening relay, battery voltage to pump, wiring, and electrical connections.
The EFI main relay is located in fuse center of engine bay, the circuit opening relay is under the steering wheel.
EFI main relay: check for continuity across terminals 1 and 2. Check for NO continuity across terminals 3 and 5. Connect battery to terminals 1 and 2, check continuity between 3 and 5.
Circuit opening relay: check for continuity across terminals STA and E1, and also +B and FC. Check for no continuity between +B and FP. Connect battery to STA and E1, check for continuity between +B and FP.
Hope this helps, and as @0xDEADBEEF said, there's some other gremlins running around with the misfires. Compression check! 20200104_080510.jpg 20200104_075129.jpg
