Hello Taco world! Been reading TC since I got my 06 Tacoma (4.0 6spd double cab 4x4 red). Well, I parked that taco into a tree early December:(. I took the insurance check, flew out to New Hampshire with my father on Wednesday, and bought an 08 Tacoma access (one on my profile) with the 6spd tranny. Only 60,000 miles!! Drove over 1,000 miles back to Chicago. Got home late tonight, and on my way to the store I shifted from second to third, and the clutch pedal stuck to the floor. I had to lift it with the top of my foot to get to the top. It now pumps normally, but something is definitely not right. Now when I take off in first, when releasing the clutch, instead of slipping, it violently grabs resulting in a terrible jolting until the truck is moving completely on it’s own. Shifting is ok, not like it was driving home but doable. This is not to be mistaken with the common “clutch shutter”, as my first Tacoma did have the clutch shudder and it is not the same.

Could this be that one of the springs on the friction plate broke off? ?? I tried searching this site for broken clutch spring symptoms, but all I got was problems with the clutch pedal return spring which I don’t think is my problem. The master/slave cylinder seems to be working fine. The only way I can describe the symptom of the clutch pedal loosing pressure when I shifted is like having to pump the brakes after installing new brake pads. Once the piston in the caliper is compressed and the gap between the pads and rotor is flush, then the brake pedal has pressure. I hope that makes sense.

My father and I took turns driving, and he hasn’t driven stick in a LONGGGG time. Pretty much every time he shifted he would just dump the clutch completely and hit the gas which resulted in a big thud (when he quickly releases the clutch pedal) followed by the truck lurching back and forth a couple times before accelerating. I didn’t say a word to him as he agreed to come with me to buy this truck haha.

If someone can point me in the right direction, that would be much appreciated. I’m sure I’m going to need to clarify some stuff, as I’m not the best at describing issues.

    TIA!

Do the simple first What does the Fluid look like in the Clutch Master Cylinder ??

Change Fluid and bleed things see if that fixes things

The clutch should not slip to it gets hot .

I have seen poor drivers take out a new clutch if it is to the point it slips all the time

Well update on the clutch. On my way home from the dmv, it for even worst. With the clutch to the floor and the truck stopped, I can get it into first with the truck running (barley) as soon as I release the clutch, the truck starts doing the lurching/slipping thing again. But this time it’s when the clutch is barely off the floor. So it’s only going to get worse. I’m taking it to toyota for the seat belt and lead spring recall, as well as frame inspection, so I may just ask them to take a look at it. My winter break is almost over and I need a A-to-B vehicle so I will not have time to do the clutch on my own

Just got the call from Toyota. They still haven’t assessed the clutch, but they are replacing the frame. The mechanic said he ordered one today, and said it will take 4-8 weeks to replace. Good news!
