O.E.M. radio upgrade for an '06?

There are definitely radio swaps that you can do but it's a bit of an involved process. In general, for many situations, the wiring may not be too bad but the issue is that the 2012+ radio also requires a new replacement bezel around it (the on that holds your middle air vents, 4x4 switch...). Depending on how this works out it could be very expensive as you could end up replacing (radio, bezel, 4x4 switch, clock, hvac controls). If buying new all of that (not including the radio) is well over $500 and even likely to be $200+ used. If you want ALL functions to work (sat radio, gps...) you could spend $100's on adapters and components. But, the wiring adapters for just basic stereo functions would probably only be $50 or so.

I'm currently in the process of gathering parts and figuring out wiring for a 2014 head unit into my 2010. So far it looks like it would have been smarter to use a 12-13 radio but I got a great deal on the one I have so am going to start with it and see where it goes. People keep telling me to go aftermarket but I hate aftermarket stereos. If this swap doesn't work then I'll probably try to find an add-on bluetooh module of some type. I'm perfectly fine with the sound of my stereo now (JBL) but just can't live without BT streaming.

There are a ton of threads on this but unfortunately the info is all very spread out. And, different people have done different swaps requiring different wiring so there's a lot too sort through. But, a few hours of research, then a few more and you should be able to figure it out.

Toyota radios are not known for having the latest and greatest features...
That being said, I'm curious as to why you're doggedly set on an OEM radio. Aesthetics, hopeful ease of swapping?

 

Thought I can get an O.E.M. that snaps in with no mods with aux from scrap yard for $75, so thought I would just go that way.

But ya, I hear what you're saying. If you do find one, cut the harness so you can compare the wiring. I'd be willing to guess that most if not all of the colors are the same, maybe in different locations on the connector.
If that's the case, you can either: move wires around in the connector, or buy a harness adapter and splice the ends so that the harness and the cut harness match up color for color.

any engine issues? I had a stuck intake valve at 260K and getting the motor swapped out presently, very sad about that. had her since new and treated her well with timely maintenance.

70-1761 fits all Toyota's from 1987. I just checked to see if they added a cutoff year to that harness since I've retired and they haven't so it makes me wonder why a newer Toyota stereo wouldn't be plug and play. I'd love to see pictures of the back of newer Toyota stereos. There isn't any extra unused pins in a Toyota stereo harness so added features (navigation, backup camera, etc.) would require either a whole new plug or adding plugs. Bluetooth itself wouldn't require any new wires in the harness. My curiosity is going to make me research this a bit more, wish me luck lol.

 

2005-2016 Tacomas use the same harness. All speaker wiring, power, and ground are identical. As I wrote before, the more features that are added the more plugs that are required and that is where problems will arise. I would guess that a newer factory Toyota stereo will operate in an older Toyota with no issues whatsoever, it's getting the added features to work that would be more difficult. If it doesn't work it would be solely because of the newer stereo needing to "see" something connected in order to work, for example maybe they require GPS hooked up to get FM to work, or maybe the steering wheel controls require to be hooked up, etc... Bluetooth by itself doesn't require any extra wiring.

The 2016 uses a different antenna system than the 2012 and older Toyotas. Those years are the years I chose to look up and are not in any way meant to be construed as cut off or design change dates.

 

Another thought, a Toyota stereo out of a different model than a Tacoma will electrically work in a Tacoma and it's possible that a person could use an aftermarket stereo double DIN mounting kit made for a Tacoma would work in installing a factory Toyota stereo out of a different model Toyota.

 

This is incorrect. The speaker wiring, power, ground connector is different for JBL and non-JBL systems. JBL systems used a different connector until 2014 when they switched back and started using that same standard one again.

Also, the other wiring is different. Your photo even shows that the ONLY connector that was the same for non-JBL is the speaker wiring connector. The accessory connector (bluetooth, aux, steering wheel controls...) is different in 05-11 vs 12+.

Additionally, in some instances wire locations will switch between those two connectors. For example in my 2010 the INT +/- wires were in the speaker/power connector but on my 2014 radio the INT wiring was on the accessory connector.

Sure would be nice if they were all plug and play, but they aren't. I just got done making my own adapter harness to fit a 2014 JBL Entune radio into my 2010 JBL Tacoma. I had to take FOUR different off the shelf adapters/harnesses and wire them all together to get it to work.

 

JBL systems are a different animal. I don't recall the OP saying his truck had a JBL system in it so there wasn't a need for me to go into a JBL system.

Since we're dissecting others comments with information that isn't relevant to the OP's topic you wrote "speaker wiring connector" and Toyota stereos do not have a dedicated speaker wiring connector, they have harness plugs with more than just speaker wires in them.

Hello! I’m the one who said the newer radio wasn’t plug and play when trying to install a later year radio in my 2006, maybe a 2009+ but not sure.

Take my comment with a grain of salt. This was over 10 years ago. All I remember for sure is I had a radio model newer than 2006 with an aux input and something didn’t work and I had to reinstall the original deck. There may be a simple fix.

I have zero interest in using a Toyota stereo. I was attempting to help the OP figure it out because the topic interests me.

36 years as a professional installer and I might have had 5 people want a factory stereo installed instead of an aftermarket stereo after their car's stereo was stolen/vandalized. Factory stereos are a lot more expensive than aftermarket stereos and if the stereo that was stolen/vandalized was an aftermarket stereo the insurance companies usually will not approve a factory stereo to be installed as the replacement.

Everything has positives and negatives. A factory stereo is far less likely to be stolen and the flip side is features and sound quality and sound quality is what it should be about IMO. No offense meant to the people with a stock stereo - with or without amps etc...

 

I have an 05 and I put in an FJammer from an 07 FJ Cruiser with an aux plug from a Yaris. It doesn't have Bluetooth built in, but I got a BluLogic off eBay and added that. I put that in because it's a 6cd mp3 with an aux input and it looks cool. I had to hack up a metra kit and it still doesn't quite for right, but function is great.
I've been pulling and selling Toyota OEM stereos on eBay for a couple of years until eBay pretty much died this year and I believe what you are looking for exists, but it's probably not as simple as you'd like.

My understanding is that:
05-08 are basic stereos, no Bluetooth, Aux, or mp3, even on the JBL.
09-11 will read mp3 and have aux. I believe only the 09-11JBL has built in Bluetooth and had the aux with usb, but the plugs at the headunit are different. Now that doesn't mean you can't use a JBL, but wiring will be a bit more involved. I have a JBL amp from a Camry that plugs into the standard Toyota radio harness and then there's a separate harness that goes from the amp to the Head unit. I haven't tested it with a Tacoma JBL head unit, but there's one that I've been watching on my local classifieds. The Tacoma JBL amp with the sub has a different plug than standard Toyota radios, but I'm not sure if that's an additional adapter like the Camry or if it's a completely different harness in the truck.
I believe that I would need a mic to get the full Bluetooth functionality out of the 09-11JBL, but I'm not sure what that looks like exactly.

12-15 are a little bit different beast. I'm not sure which ones have Bluetooth or what peripherals you need to plug into it that you'd have to pull as well. With the touch screen and nav I haven't looked too deep into that yet.

One thing to consider is that the 09-11JBL head unit doesn't support audio streaming over Bluetooth, only phone calls. My BluLogic does stream audio, but only over the front two speakers. I have a reg cab, so it doesn't bother me. But you have to make sure you get the right part number because the earlier ones don't stream audio.

I think Amazon killed them. We have a solid online classifieds section through the local news website, so I just assumed that was why Craigslist wasn't used here in the greater salt lake City area as much as other places.

eBay got so saturated with cheap Chinese listings and Amazon Prime has changed the online marketplace so much, it made it unprofitable for Joe Schmoe private sellers and so I think a lot of people stopped selling on eBay which made even more buyers leave. If you're looking to buy cheap Chinese trinkets or pay good money for collectibles, I think eBay still works, but otherwise it's all Amazon now.

 

I can confirm 2011 non-JBL is plug and play to an 05. There are extra features/plugs on the 2011 (like steering wheel controls) that I don't use but the main harness speakers etc. match up. It works fine and R&R was literally a 15 minute job.

 

2011 nonJBL doesn't support Bluetooth, correct?
