Transmission drain and refill oil type

My Tacoma is a 2012 2.7L 2x2 base. I bought the filter and gasket for the transmission and need to buy oil to refill. How many quarts of what kind of fluid should I buy for a drain and refill? Not sure I want to do a complete drain. Any guidance appreciated.

I recently changed out the filter and drained the pan and refilled. It took about 3.5 quarts.

Any dexron II will work. Toyota WS, Vavoline Max life and I have also used global multi vehicle ATF for more price conscientious friends ($25 a gallon!) with no issues.

 

Maxlife is an economical way to go. $18 for a 4 quart jug at Walmart. I've had nothing but good results with it. Been using it for sometime in several high mileage Toyotas in the family.

 

But if you're willing to pay the price, you can't go wrong with WS. In my area it retails for about $10 a quart. I was able to to get it from my local dealer for $7.75.

 

OP has the 2.7, so the WS type ATF is not relevant. and the video refers to the A750 as well. the 2.7 uses Type IV fluid and has a dipstick for checking the level

 

Oops. I stand corrected. Forgot about the 2.7 having a different fluid. But Maxlife still applies.

 

I did the 3qt drain and added this stuff..

When i do end up flushing the entire system, i will continue to use the Lubeguard stuff too. I'm at 205k mi with absolutely 0 issues and my transmission should be failing by now with some of the dumb shit i've done.. such as going up sand dunes 100% throttle in 4wd and the truck rolling to a stop while still 100% throttle

The idea of a simple drain and fill is just fine. Since this appears to be your first time, I'd recommend NOT pulling the pan. Do your drain/fill, then drive a few hundred miles to mix things up and let the fresh additives do a bit of cleaning. Then do another drain and fill, pull the pan and replace the filter if you think it needs that.

Isn't your replacement filter metal mesh? That means you can pop out the old one and should be able to clean it up.

Personally I do the drain fill every 30k and never bother pulling the pan. As long as the drain isn't burnt smelling and very dark, nothing inside should need attention.

 

my mistake, i did not read thoroughly and did not realize it was a 2.7. Please disregard my inaccurate suggestion of fluids and forgive my sloppy reading.

 

Cut me some slack. My two 2.7s were 3 pedal rigs. I forgot the autos were perpetually stuck in 1989.
