Would a good detailer be able to mitigate my paint damage or is it too far gone? Any help is appreciated!20200107_114844.jpg 20200107_114850.jpg

Sorry to hear about your paint troubles.....
Clear coat has failed and the paint is surly oxidized. Even the best detailer might be able to remove and restore but this condition would reoccur.
Best to take the truck and have the hood and possibly (checked) the roof for clear coat failure and have repainted.
How old is the truck? check for any warranty conditions that you could explore to have this covered first....good luck!

Unfortunately it's a 2006 so there is most likely no warranty left at all. I pretty much figured that the paint is gone - the roof is in the same condition. So my best bet will most likely be repainting it eventually. Thank you for the reply!

    No Problem....can I offer a suggestion?
You're in the Sacramento Ca area...if your not to fussy; try a local High School that offers auto body work. They are always with oversight from professional forks in the trade and you can help a student and you'll get a great end results at a lower price.
    Just a suggestion.....Go Team TW!

Get a wrap, cheaper than a repaint.

My hood and roof are getting bad too and a repaint of just those at a good shop $1800-2000 (entire truck $5000-6000) so maybe a wrap for me too.
A full vehicle wrap around $2000 and I was quoted $700 at a shop to wrap the roof and hood so DIY time with 25x5' roll $140 VViViD or $200 for 3M.

FYI - The hood dings/chips must be smoothed out first or they will show thru the wrap so have to sand and prime that area.
Look under the side door windows and I'll bet that has the same clearcoat fade crap starting or worse - all horizontal surfaces.
The roof area above my doors is also starting to go so its like a creeping crud! My Tacoma runs great just looks like crap.
Good news is I do not mind shopping carts and stupid door dings too much anymore!

Yup! You are calling it exactly. Under all the windows etc all starting to develop a white tinge as it slowly fades away. 2k for a wrap isnt bad- I just love the speedway blue. I may get it detailed as I save for the wrap to buy some time until I figure out what other color would look good, maybe battleship gray or OD green!

Eh, you can somewhat recover that, but it won't be a long term solution. Careful use of a medium cut compound then a fine cut polish (being careful not to burn through the color coat) to rip the oxidation off will at least make it shiny again, at least for a while. A good sealant on top, and you could probably make it last a few months. The oxidation will come back eventually though, and only a repaint will fix it permanently.

Just be glad you don’t have a white Toyota; Not only does the clearcoat tend to fail on these, but paint itself will peel off and expose bare metal.

I had a brief stint as a detailer, and I can tell you that if you wanted it looking new again your best bet would be to repaint the hood; It sucks too because Speedway Blue is one of my favorite colors on the 2nd Gen Taco!

On another note, I got hit by a drunk driver in my truck (which is Silver Streak Mica; see avatar pic), and the entire left rear fender had to be replace; I had my truck repaired by Butch’s Bodyworks in Danboro, PA and they did a much better job than the factory did!

Did this exact thing for my 92 Nissan Hardbody. Paint was literally flying off that truck in sheets. The HS kids did a good job for what it is. Ended up donating the truck to the same high school so they can use it for the auto repair class practice.

Pretty much the exact same thing on my hood. Paint is fine everywhere else. Was thinking of just having the hood re-painted.

I have been to numerous wrapping places here in SoCal. They all say that if you want it to last more then 3-5 years then get it painted. Wraps are cool at first but don't last as long as a good paint job.
