I have both and use both still. My RTT is definitely more comfortable than my ground tent. Both take me about the same time to set up. Ground tent is semi free standing so find the right ground and being able to stake down my tent is a must. front door only on my ground tent makes picking a spot harder. both have its benefits and that is why i still use both. But if i want to be comfortable, i prefer the RTT. the ground tent is nice if you plan on staying in the same location for a couple of nights.

My wife and I love our tri-level!! Definitely not putting up and taking down this whole thing in five minutes. Sure packs up into a small package though!

An RTT isn't stopping a bear any more than a ground tent would. Just sayin'...

Maybe not, but it will slow his ass down long enough for me to empty a magazine into it!

I can set my rtt up in under 2 minutes to a sleep ready condition (as proven on a rainy night). Cant say the same for my ground tent. Packing it away takes about the same time. Maybe I have a shitty ground tent? IDK.

I can manage to sleep in mine on uneven ground, but I always find a way to get the ground tent over a tree root, etc and I can't manage that as easily even with an inflatable pad. Downside of only having lightweight backpacking gear is it isn't nearly as "gucci".

granted my dog is only 70 pounds, but I muffintop him around the legs, then only have to go about 2 rungs up before he gets in. Honestly, getting them out is harder since they have a tendency to sit at the door and trying to get around their back legs is harder.

When you have a truck, who cares about a lightweight tent.

Maybe that lightweight tent is the only thing keeping his truck under GVWR?

I've been looking into the whole RTT vs ground tent vs SWAG thing for awhile. What we (wife and I) have decided is, that we would buy a larger tent to house cot's when her, the kids and I go camping. Then, I could use the same cot with a SWAG when I go on hunting trips. For us, it's cost effective and should work out just fine for our needs. I could technically ditch the cot and just place the SWAG on top of my DB bed cover and have a makeshift RTT :notsure:.

Hardest thing that I've found is keeping the tent (pick your flavor) cool in the summer. Warm is easy in the fall/winter. But being butt ass naked might scare the kids and other campers. Btw, here are links to the tent, cots and SWAG:

    Tent: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VFH1RQ...olid=3VS04MA5V5CAZ&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

    Cot: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GLGRVU...olid=3VS04MA5V5CAZ&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

    SWAG: https://www.kodiakcanvas.com/swag-1-person-canvas-tent/

**sidebar, if I know there will be plentiful trees, I'd rather just take my hammock. That can also be setup as a 1 man tent in a pinch. And the hammock wins in the speed category easily. As long as there are trees..... or at least one tree and I can get close to it with my truck.

I meant it as, my chair is 20lbs and im not buying a spork because its 7 grams. Ill buy a full set of fork/knife/spoon because i dont have to worry about weight when truck camping.

And I guarantee you that im not in the GVWR range on my truck. I need to weight it soon, when im fully loaded for a multiple day trip

It scared me a lil when I hit the dump scale recently.

And yeah, I'm with you. I'm not a backpacker. I can haul everything I might want and be comfortable while enjoying the great outdoors. I even have steak knives!

I can see the point of both ground tents/RTT. Depends what fits your budget, lifestyle, and how much of a pain in the ass one is willing to deal with.
