The real wacky shit is the ammo law that started in July... the way that's worded, if you leave the state with a loaded mag in your otherwise legal CCW pistol, then come back into the state with the same pistol, you are breaking the law by importing ammo. The same ammo you already bought legally, paid $1 to have a background check conducted on, and lawfully carry in your gun.

Like I said I agree with all this. But what about the one-time act of failing to register within 60 days, if somehow provable (most likely only ever prosecuted under inadvertent admissions of guilt)?

I believe 12072(g)(1) makes the act of failing to register within 60 days of importation a misdemeanor (but as you said there's nothing wrong with mere unregistered possession)

I have to disagree with this (sorry not trying to be a pain in the ass here), PC 30314, see bold text:

It seems you're only restricted from importing ammo that was purchased out of state

Yeah, yeah, you know what I meant, LOL. I hadn't done my due diligence on the ammo thing and was repeating some drivel I heard elsewhere on that one.

I think the most important take away is many of California's gun laws are useless to prosecutors if you just keep your mouth shut. Like literally not a word, let them take you in if you have to just don't talk. You'll never talk yourself out of trouble but you can and will talk yourself into it.
