You can use this as an excuse to buy an aftermarket skid plate that has an access port for the filter and drain plug. I just got an RCI skid plate and it really shows how inadequate the stock one is. It should be considered more of a gravel guard than any kind of real protection.

The engine in the Taco debuted way back in 2004 with the '05 Avalon. 16 model years later people are still discovering this "new" filter arrangement. :D

It just wasn't that way in the Tacoma, it sucks, but it is what it is.

Usually the cartridge style filters are on top of the engine. Or at least my Audi's and VW's were. Sure beats getting under the vehicle especially since I pumped the oil out.

I'm the resident mechanic in a family and neighborhood with lots of Toyotas. I've lost count of the number of cartridge oil changes I've done over the last 15 years. Camrys, Avalons, Prius, Corollas, RAV4s, Siennas, Highlanders, a few Lexus vehicles as well. It's 2nd nature to me.

Couple of tips. 1st...buy the right housing wrench....the TOY640. Don't use cap wrench that almost fits. You stand the chance of rounding off the plastic housings.

2nd...remember that the housing is sealed by an o-ring, not a gasket. Therefore, torquing it down is not necessary. A light snug is all that's needed.

I've never damaged a housing....metal or plastic. And I've never had one leak. And frankly, it's no more a pain in the ass than removing a canister filter from the 2.7 4 banger.

I guess I will get used to it. I was spoiled, my old truck had the filter up front on top of the engine. I had the fumoto valve so oil changes were a matter of minutes. Guess I was just spoiled. Thanks everyone for your input. All good info.

I get NAPA gold or WIX filters. IMO the best of the best. You are going to need the special socket to fit that filter too. It runs around 20 bucks at NAPA . I figured I could get it off with tools I have, but I figured wrong. And when you use it it fits one way and only one way with a series of slots that must line up to lugs on the plastic oil filter housing . If you misalign it you will wish you didn't .

I had a 2008, now I have a 2019, just picked it up last week. I need to update my profile.
Yes, oil changes were super easy.

Has anybody tried to cut a hole in the existing skid plate to change the filter?

It takes a minute to take it off, it's really not hard.

I was going to cut a bit of the OEM skid to allow for oil changes without the hassle of removing the plate - ended up picking up a TRD Skid during the 40% off deal - but you wouldn't have to cut much...4 inch hole saw should do the trick.

BTW pick up one of these - it will make getting the housing off easier...

    https://www.amazon.com/Removal-Alum...filter+wrench&qid=1564536294&s=gateway&sr=8-4

I also picked up a 10 pack of filters from this Toyota dealership off eBay. They include 10 drain plug gaskets. Free shipping, so you get them for $3.45 cents including a drain plug gasket. (yes they have the Toyota hologram - OEM)

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Ten-10-04152-YZZA1-Genuine-Toyota-Oil-Filters-with-Drain-Gaskets-Camry-Avalon/352570580274?_trkparms=pageci%3A5aae0008-b332-11e9-bc65-74dbd1801b5c%7Cparentrq%3A45a39d0b16c0ad31c3d5443dfff0724c%7Ciid%3A1&_trksid=p2481888.c100675.m4236

I bought the hose attachment to drain the filter housing before removing it - you'll see it on Amazon, but I would pass...once you get the initial housing plug off a small amount of oil spillage is unavoidable - so waste of money I think.

I also picked up a Fumitomo? valve which I will install at my next oil change. Only because the TRD skid access hole is small and hard to remove plug without spilling oil all over the top side of the skid plate - PITA to clean it up....

Takes a minute to take it off, but a pain in the neck to line it up again to put it back on, unless you can lift the truck up

Can’t you just cut a hole in it yourself with a large diagonal cutter?

TRD Larry I lived in Bethel Park, PA for a few years while working for the railroad. Loved that area. Small world...but I wouldn’t want to paint it. Lol

Yep, keeps unnecessary metal out of the landfill while increasing the number of oil spills on driveways. I was tired of cleaning my driveway and felt guilty about washing the oil down the sewer, so now I change my oil in the ocean next to a crowded beach full of seals.
