I recently replaced my generator connector plug (because it was broken.) After driving the truck for a few days the battery wasn’t charging. I then noticed one of the (three) wires had a short. I bought three replacement wires and soldered them in. I thought the wires going into the connector plug went in this order; yellow, red and white, from the top, left to right. I have the service manual but can’t find a wiring diagram.

My alternator and battery are new but my battery light, on the dash, stays on.

When I switch the yellow and white wires the battery light is off, even in the auxiliary position.

I’m getting 14+ volts from the battery when the truck is running, no matter witch way the (yellow and white) wires are positioned.

Any help would be appreciated... 4CE7BC40-7B33-4C37-A580-6DCC667E66F1.jpg

So, if I’m reading this right; yellow is 1, red is 2 and white is 3?

If so, this is how I have it and the battery light still stays on... but everything is new... I soldered all connections and put heat shrink tubing on the exposed solder connections.

Could I have a bad (new) alternator?

Edit: the alternator is producing 14+ volts..

I am confused the battery was not charging but your alternator is putting out 14+ volts?

Just what voltage is the alternator putting out ??

The light also comes on during over voltage conditions

Are you reading this with a Meter ??

If you had a short do you have open circuit protection or melted burnt wires ??

Was this a brand new plug or used not uncommon to have used ones corrode .

Double check wiring but, also check your fuse in the box under the hood, it should be a 7.5A fuse labeled Alternator. Given that your battery light is on it’s probably not this but worth looking as part of troubleshooting.

I did. I rechecked the wiring and it was correct.

When fooling with the wires I didn’t disconnect my battery (d’oh) and blew the fuse.

I know I might ask some lame questions but, I do appreciate all the help guys! Happy New Year!

You have a fuse labeled Alternator? I've looked at the fuse block, next to the battery, and didn't see a fuse with that label. I guess I need to look again. My battery light won't go off either.

It’s actually labeled “Alt-S” for alternator sense, located in fuse box under the hood. This is the feedback to the alternator of battery voltage so the regulator in the alternator can adjust voltage up/down. Check it, but also consider replacing alternator brushes if your battery light is on.

I found it...the terminals were a little "crusty" so I cleaned them up and replaced the fuse. The light is still on. Bummer.

check your alternator brushes, a replacement is under $20 and quite easy to replace once you remove the alternator.

The alternator is less than 2 weeks old.

Just why was the Alternator replaced??

Was the battery charged before you attempted to start your vehicle .

When did the light come back on?/

Have you checked the voltage at the battery the light will light on a over voltage condition as well as low voltage .

Does not mean it has not failed already depending just who the rebuilder is.

break out the Meter $20.00 will get you one to do what you need to.

I didn't think the charging system monitored the battery. But to answer your question - terminals were cleaned; battery will charge up to about 75% (it's old - but not as old as me)
