I know, I was surprised it weighed so much. It didn't have electric brakes but it did have surge brakes which helped a lot to an extent.

I towed a 2004 GTO home. GTO with a tow dolly. It was a preeeettttty sketchy. Every minor road bump had me puckering. I did it at night to avoid most of the traffic. The fastest I was willing to go was about 50mph. I felt guilty as hell doing it because I had to lie to Uhaul to let me rent the dolley. "Uh yeah, I'm hauling a...1988 Honda Civic..."
I think that Pigfat car was like 4000 lbs and the dolley is 500 or whatever.
Acceleration isn't hampered that much, but braking and steering quickly goes out the window. Also, the truck squats like crazy with that type of load.
One of the issues is that the truck accelerates so well, it gives you a false sense of confidence.

Over the 4 years I owned the truck, I used it to tow a couple of cars, but I feel the GTO was the heaviest. I also loaded it up regularly with 25-30 2cu.ft. bags of mulch. I think 22 is the max I should have loaded up. Boy would that thing squat

5700 pound cargo trailer to Les Schwabs down the road. I have a brake controller/ air bags and would not recommend it for long trips. Also have a 1200 pound camper for the bed of it for camping.

I’m not certain the weight, but about eleven years back when I lived in Wyoming, a friend asked me to tow his late 80’s Volvo wagon from the Idaho side across the Teton pass.

My ‘04 2.7L was bone stock. It was one of the scariest experiences I’ve had driving. Halfway through the tow strap snapped and we had to jury rig it to get him another 30 miles through the mountains to a mechanic. His oil pan had busted, so a tow was the only way that car was moving.

You towed a Volvo station wagon from the Idaho side over Teton Pass with a 2.7??!!!!!:rofl::rofl: There is no tow story I've found on this forum that matches THAT! You've got balls.:eek::eek: For anyone who doesn't know. Teton is a 10% grade five miles long. The rest of it is no joke either. As a matter of fact I wouldn't want to take my 2.7RC 4X4 up there in that part of the country with nothing in tow. Sure, it could do it, no problem, but why take and extra 3+ hrs to do it. Even with nothing in the bed and nothing in tow? Just driving around up there in that part of the country would have you rowing the shifter constantly with nothing in tow. I doubt you'd rarely get above 60mph for very long. Except on the downhills.

My, my that is a good tow story there. I bet it was scary. Especially the descent.:bowdown::bowdown:. An 80's Volvo station wagon has got to weigh 4000lbs if it weighs an ounce.
OMG! I would have loved to been there to see that! Please tell us you didn't do it in the winter!:fingerscrossed:

Just for kicks I looked up an '88 Volvo wagon and they say it weighs 3043-3093lbs.

I can tell you over 5000# yanks you around enough that it's unsafe at anything over a crawl speed. It'll do it but Toyota is right to keep the limit under. 1/2 pallet of concrete in the bed is too much also. (1500#)

I regularly towed a 22 foot pontoon boat with my gen one four cylinder standard. It was over the tow weight. The motor did fine, but the brakes, chassis and the clutch were lacking. It was always a “ tail wagging the dog” Experience.

Single cab I pull this trailer.
It’s a 14 foot trailer I think , 6.5” tall, double axle with electric brakes.

Longest trip was 2400 miles round trip loaded down maybe total weight was 4000 pounds with the trailer, Highway miles flat.

Truck pulled it ok at 65mph, but was like pulling a kite and gas mileage was like 10 mpg.
It’s doable but you would be much better off with a larger truck

I used to regularly tow my ( approximately 1,600 lb ) Casita camper thousands of miles with my base model 2.4 Tacoma. No problems, but top speed on flat ground was maybe 65.

the most my truck towed was when we built our deck... i think the trailer with the load was close to 7k... but we were going 5 miles.. so slow and steady with it. she handled it well. the deavers didnt like it though.. but as usual, the f-350 was.. well dead

Largest thing for both my v6 tacoma’s

we’ll start with my old truck, my 2000 xtra cab V6 5 speed. TRD supercharged, URD 7th injector and 2.2 pulley, JBA headers, and a magnaflow muffler at that time. This was after I rebuilt the transmission, but prior to regearing to 4.56’s. The trailer is my dad’s PJ 16’ dual axle car trailer, coming in at roughly 2000lbs. If I had to guess, towing a 95 4Runner (aprox. 3750lbs.). No trailer brakes on the truck, but it did have tundra brakes. Biggest thing I have a photo of.

    9ADE2408-9EF9-4609-A90E-1A2879230298.jpg

my current truck. 2004 double cab. TRD supercharged, magnaflow cat-back exhaust, Hayden 678 trans cooler, and tundra brakes. Same PJ 16’ dual axle car trailer with my 2007 Prius (aprox. 3000lbs.). I have added a trailer brake controller since I took this photo

I filled a dual axle u-haul trailer with dirt and towed it to my brother's house. Never weighed it, but it was for sure over 5k. Trailer alone was probably 2500, lol

Was in rural North Dakota one time and witnessed a 1st Gen DC towing a gooseneck trailer with, I shit you not, 2 4runners on it (a 2nd and 3rd Gen). Had to do a double take because I couldn't believe it. Wish I had gotten a picture.
