The stock diff does have a gasket, you will need a razor to scrape it off. It's a PITA, took me 20-30mins to remove all of it. ECGS recommends permatex gasket sealer instead of the OE Toyota gasket. I used permatex grey. You can get permatex on Amazon or at Home Depot.

Scrape old gasket off, and you can use RTV to seal.

Doubt it. You disconnected the hydraulic brake lines? Did you bleed them? If not, now you're going to need a full flush as air could have entered the pump. Sensors are pretty hardly, pull them out again, spray a rag with brake cleaner and wipe them off. Make sure all electrical connections that you disconnected are tight. Attempt to pull them apart. If they dont come apart, then most likely they have a good connection.

just checking, is the front differential still not installed?

The rear differential is a 3rd member or drop out differential.

The front differential is a clamshell differential.

I posted a few pages back asking this same question. remove the old gasket and apply new permatex grey gasket maker. i'll link it below. mine cleaned up easily, although my truck only has about 5k miles on it lol. Removed old gasket and whiped surface with IPA alcohol. Then, applied a thin film to the 3rd member side. smoothed it out and mounted it up. no leaks so far. you also need to apply it to the front clam where the diff tube connects to it.

75mi into break in and loving it so far....from what little I can tell from driving like a grandma. Excited to get over that 100mi mark so I can start driving her a little more like herself up to that 500mi gear oil change!

It's almost hard to tell it's in there driving around like this huh? I am in about the same spot with my beak in. Mostly i've noticed that when i baby it in whatever gear i'm in, i'm waiting for it to downshift but it doesn't. Can't wait to see how they do towing my Travel Trailer this summer.

What do you guys think about towing an aluminum sled trailer and keeping under 50 with 1 snowmobile on it during first 500 mi break in? weighs approx 1200lb with sled on it. not a good idea even if i pull over at the 50 mi intervals to allow diffs to cool? not a heavy pull by any means, but deff don't wanna risk anything. Prolly better to play it safe and log some more miles on it. I'm running lucas 85w-140. would have about 250 mi on it by then. Snows falling and i'm gettin that itch! lol might need to go for some late night drives.

You're right Joe. I think i've got some late night after work miles ahead of me to break em in. Maybe i'll wax my ski's up and hit the resort. good opportunity to break them in too, and get some use out of my season pass.

@blitzkrieg3002 As mentioned above....it's a BIG investment and I'd break them in per ECGS recommendations. Don't want to risk the awesome warranty either!!!

I hear yea. I guess I just figured looking at some of the rigs on here there’s guys exceeding the weight I’d be towing just on their vehicle alone. Who knows tho, maybe they added a lot of that weight after breakin. But deff better to play it on the safe side of things.

Hey I just purchased my 5.29s gears.
I have a question. Do I have to use nitro gear oil?

If I dont, what gear oil do you guys recommend? Thank you

No you don’t. I recommend any conventional 85-140 for the rear and 80-90 for the front for break in. Not sure how many guys here live in cold climate with 85-140 in the front. I’ve heard it can make it harder to engage 4x4

No. You can/should use a quality gear oil of the correct vicosity to match climate and load application.

I haven’t noticed it being any harder to engage but I run 4x4 a lot which keeps it consistently lubed.

I suppose in theory it may take a bit to get the chain and upper sump fully lubed but idk.

    THANK you for the info!
    its great help.

another question. once my 500 mile break in period is done, do i have to change the front differential oil as well?

a service tech at the dealership said i do have to change it at the 500 mile mark as well, but i am not sure.
