Hey guys I'm a new tacoma owner, 2013 offroad.5k miles. I noticed a ta ta ta while driving. I've sat in park rev'd to 1500 rpm is when I hear it clearest. After that the engine overwhelms the sound. I've been researching and what I've found that it could be the infamous tacoma tick, exhaust leak, weight of the oil or a gasket but not entirely sure. Anyone that has encoutered this or knows about the noise, any suggestions? Won't be able to stop by the dealer soon, too busy with work.

I get that same sound on my 2012 it drives me a little crazy because I only hear it when I'm moving and I come up on a highway barrier or a wall so it really sounds like an exhaust leak.

Yeah it's driving me nuts. But I find a way to test for a leak, get an old rag, start your truck and hold the rag to the tail pipe to restrict flow and it should in a sense isolate the leak, and hear the ta ta at more clearly at idle. will be a lot easier with a buddy to find where it leaks. Bout to give it a shot to see if I hear it.

At the dealership now, went for a ride with a tech. He was saying its normal then whipped out the owners manual to the gasoline section and engine knocking. it said that it's normal to hear a knock while accelerating or going up hill, and to test out different brands of gas like chevron, circle k ect. Or different octane levels. Basically the quality of gasoline. Currently getting checked for any leaks. Will update with what I hear.

I have yet to use a different octane sense I just filled up a few days ago.. The owners manual refers it to a knock I think more of a tick or ta ta sound.
Page 467 in owners manual. They checked for leaks and didn't have any so I guess my answer is the infamous taco tick....

Mine does the same thing. Sounds just like a leaking exhaust manifold gasket.

Should run mid grade. Toyota lied to keep fuel costs down and said regular is fine. Same engine in the old fj's said to run mid grade.

I'm probably gonna put a tank full of high grade fuel next fill up. I just put a can of chevron techron in. Hopefully it helps...

So all these years later I'm curious how this all played out.
