Only common denominator here is your phone; do you have permissions set up correctly?

    Have you restarted your phone?

I know I couldn't use my GPS cause I accidentally quit sharing my location, or had it disabled with all apps.

All permissions are set up correctly, location is on, restarted phone about 60 times. It at least recognized my wife's s9. Ipod still doesn't work either. It did recognize spotify via bluetooth. I do think there were some funny things going on with the first one. But it didn't fix my AA issue

Have you verified that your phone does indeed work on other AA equipped vehicles?

This does sound familiar to me though. When Android Auto updated in August, there was a trick you could do to force the update on your phone as Google was rolling it out slowly. You’d have to clear your cache, force the app to stop and reset the app. Your issue seems to be very similar to the issues many had after the update was installed and people had to clear the cache and force stop the app again as there were permission issues in trying to connect to their cars.

FWIW, go into your apps section in settings. Force stop AA, clear the cache then reboot your phone and then see what happens.

process of elimination leads me to believe it’s the phone unfortunately. When I was installing professionally ( 25 years ) many problems were the cable or phone. Unfortunately AA was the majority of those. Apple ALWAYS worked but when someone came in asking for AA I would tell them that it’s a crap shoot and flip a coin. It got to be so bad that I would bench test the unit with THEIR phone before selling or installing if an AA customer. I’ve been burned too many times that I chose not to waste their money and my time for disappointment. These radios are getting very finicky because it’s resistance base with the cable and length. I used to integrate factory usbs to give the factory look but it’s getting harder with KENWOOD cable then customer phone cable then integration cable.
1 thing you can try if not doing this already. Literally run the kenwood usb to phone cable and nothing longer. Use a approved phone cable ( preferably the one that came with phone ). Do not use any Toyota USB adapter. If still not working, then as you mentioned... upgrade phone or jump ship. As for the radio itself, it is a great radio even though right now it is nothing more than a paper weight. I personally am Apple so any update for AA or settings in the phone I can’t help. Apple literally is plug and go no app
    Good luck

so I did that. Factory cable straight off the usb off the radio. Might jump ship to iPhone when I upgrade soon. I even tried a little like 6 inch cable i had.

Have never tried AA before. I'll have to try to force the update and clear cache

So I think I probably fixed it, I'll have to confirm this afternoon.

Went out and bought an iPhone 11 Pro......that should do the trick.

Buttttt the charger cable is USB C, have to get a USB to Lightning after work. This has been a anything but seamless

You bought a thousand dollar phone because your $330 radio wasn’t working right?... sounds to me like somebody just really wanted a new phone lol

I did need a new phone anyways, this just put me over the edge of actually doing it. Kill 2 birds with 1 radio

I just bought the same stereo for my truck. I had all the issues everyone's talking about. I went back to Best buy to help me troubleshoot it. He reset the stereo back to factory, I uninstalled the update for Android Auto, I purchased a cable for my phone that is a data transfer/charging cable. I connected everything together, started my truck followed the instructions between the stereo and my phone... Everything works perfectly now. I believe the main issue was not having a data transfer cable attached
