I catch the techs in the shop missing this all the time.

The in bound Guide tubes should at least be looked at every wire spool change

The ones making $100,000 plus a year that can`t weld to repair welders .

Thanks for all the responses. Tubes weren’t capped so gas could escape. Most the metal was old but some was new and oily so that probably didn’t help. And welder is only a few years old but I’ll try cleaning the rollers and that. Probably a combination of a few things fausing it.

I'm guessing you are quoting the "how hard is it to weld" comment.
MIG welding. A few hours with a competent mentor. A couple days with the internet and no fear to post pics of your welds.

Stick welding. A few weeks or less if hard core effort. Again, post picks.

TIG welding. 3 weeks minimum with several months of practice and pic posting.

I will freely admit that MIG welding is the most user friendly for most welding situations. I also admit I have no use for stick or TIG welding. MIG welding just works for most welding situations.

I'll allow the others to chime in and challenge my post.

Yea referring to the quoted message. I was referring to stick and wire feed. Excluding TIG and torch welding as those are more of an art than a skill.

Evreyone should learn how to stick weld first, really helps you learn wtf is going on and how to read a puddle. Most of the difficulty with that is getting the arc struck.

Stick welding is usefull for trail repairs, I have a few sets of jumper cables, a cheat sheet on how to hook up the batteries and some rods in my wheeler incase I have to do some trail welding.

People overhype how hard it is to actually weld, I was intimidated as hell and after learning it was a "that's it?". Saying that I have zero TIG experience, that seems like a PITA to learn, a lot going on, but a cool process for sure.

These times are to pass a simple bend test in the flat position ?

Though Mig welding allows so many bad habits to be self taught .

A while back some how newbe welders were allowed to weld lifting eyes on completed jobs .

Cold Lap caused a failure in the field lucky no one was killed all the eyes were cut off and re welded in the field.

Till OSHA got done with the fines going through everything then the other federal agencies had to get involved .

Some Good people were looking for new jobs

I agree MIG is the easiest to learn. I personally think everyone should learn to stick weld first before touching a MIG to get more understanding of how it works and what you're doing.

I learned to weld with a stick at 10 years old, it wasn't until I was 20 years old before I ever saw a MIG welder and used it. TIG is a different animal to me and I admire and respect the people who can make amazing welds with them. I can do okay with a TIG but I don't do it enough to keep in practice with it.

In the old days before the dinosaurs we started with OXY-Fuel brazing and welding before seeing an electric arc.

I will say it did make it easy to pick up Tig Welding for me.

I wonder how many trigger pullers would freak out seeing Arc blow the first time.

I watched dad braze with a torch and coat hanger many a times in my younger days.

And since this is the welding thread, here's a weld.
