Not really a “Kayak” except that it’s plastic. lol.

But the moment Kayak Bass Fishing (KBF, a National organization of all things Kayak Bass fishing) approved it for their Fishing tournaments, I hit the “Buy Now” button. Lol.

And how I ended up with a 2500 Ram and an 8.5 V plow for my personal driveway, when I already had a perfectly functional plow truck...

Of course, it's snowballing and I'm now regularly plowing 6-8 other driveways per storm...

Which means I need to start looking at commercial insurance to go with the commercial plates I had to upgrade to.

You had to get commercial plates because you started plowing or do you need them just because of the GVW?

    GVW.
In Maine anything over 6k lbs needs to be registered commercial, and with the plow, ballast, and driver I'm up around 8k.
I asked when I bought the truck if I needed to get commercial plates, and the lady at the town office said I'd be fine. The last time around I mentioned the plow, 800lbs of ballast, and the fact that I'd hauled an overloaded 16k lb dump trailer repeatedly over the summer and she turned a funny shade of purple.

A DCLB with a cap...maybe. one thing I've found about an HD truck is that an HD frame and HD axles/driveline account for a lot of weight.

I assumed you meant anything over 6k lbs gvw needs a commercial plate in Maine, I think a Tacoma is just shy of that based on the door sticker. I'm surprised Maine's threshold is so low, most half ton trucks would exceed that. I think the 250 weighs around 6,500 lbs empty, she's a heavy sum bish, 10k lb gvw. Fortunately, I'm still running non-commercial plates.

Yeah I was looking up HD truck weights not long ago, 6-8k depending on packages seems to be normal. I was sort of shocked.

I guess if they are meant to pull 30k though, they need to be able to stop it too.

I just bought my tacoma in December and I've already had people look at me and go "Hey, you have a truck right....?"

    :annoyed:

Fortunately I only have a 3 car driveway so now plow, so not as many requests. I do have an electric snow blower though I got on craigslist this year, have yet to need it though :D

The ram is 6400-ish, empty. But town office lady said that if I wasn't doing any heavy hauling that I could get away with a regular passenger plate. So I said okey dokey, but I was reading up on it over the summer when I was hauling gravel and realized that before I even put anything in the trailer I was over 10,000lbs. Once I loaded it up with gravel...forget it.

Hmm....Now I know. I always saw a ton of regular trucks with commercial plates in Maine and it kind of surprised me. Probably related to logging if I had to guess, people probably tried to skirt the requirements way back when.

    https://www.maine.gov/dps/msp/investigation-traffic/commercial-vehicle-unit/faq

Why does my pick-up truck have commercial plates when I am not in commerce?

In Maine, all vehicles over 6,000 pounds are registered by weight. This is true whether you are in business or are a private person. Any vehicle registering for a weight more than 6,000 lbs is given a commercial plate. "Commercial" is simply the name of the category of plate.

A pick-up truck can be registered as a passenger car, but then is limited to a weight of 6,000 lbs for vehicle and load. Many larger pick-up trucks weigh more than 6,000 lbs empty. These vehicles must register for a higher weight.
