All dealers are Independent so they charge what the traffic will bare.

I wonder in OP`s case if they were not quoted the price for a chipped key.

since the bulk of the Dealers service is new vehicles.

Hi there, this is a corollary to the saga of identifying my key.
Went to a Toyota Dealer up North (cheaper area) who quoted me $16 for a key, which I found reasonable.
I was also told my Taco's key code #10908
BUT (and there is always a big BUT) when we went to cut the key it did not look nowhere near the one I have and use, the one pictured here.
So, it appears that my truck got the locks re-keyed, that may explain the simple pattern of my key.
In conclusion, there are no such $7 keys at the Toyota dealer, but yes $16 ones.
Having the right key code means nothing, the guy who dealt with me told me they see this all the time, cars with key codes changed I mean.
I am back to square one, I guess my only option is to get a couple of copies at a locksmith with a manual machine.
Thanks for all the previous input.

Did you have a key that works? If you do I’d just remove the key cylinder and take it to the locksmith and have him rekey it to the original key. (Unless they changed the door locks too)

Yes, if you pay attention to the phrase "So, it appears that my truck got the locks re-keyed, that may explain the simple pattern of my key."
it is talking about all locks otherwise it would say so.

    That it would. My bad.
You’d be surprised how many people don’t know that they’re car has a different ignition cylinder just because they use the key fob
    Get get in.

In any case a locksmith is your best bet.

+with all the other folks. And another advantage is that a key made this way is an "original", cut to the key number, not duplicated from the contours of another key with the attendant inevitable loss in precision. Sort of like an original print vs multiple generations of photocopying.

(Offered not as a solution to your rekeyed ignition, op, but to others who may find this thread in the future.)

Well my next option would be to disassemble the passenger door to see the number on the lock barrel (need to know how) then I will be 100% if my locks were re-keyed or all swapped. Then if the lock code is different go and see if that matches my key profile.

    True detective work.

PS Anyone knows an easy way to remove the passenger door lock?

Just remove the gas door lock cylinder. It’s held in with a single clip.

Do you mean Hail Mary? Punt means you’re giving up. or at the very least putting it on hold for later. Hail Mary would be like a low percentage last ditch effort.

ahaha you hit the nail on its head!!! I do not have a gas door lock, it is missing!

My Taco is a 99 std thing 2.4L single cab auto

"taking a punt" in Australia, where I come from is "having a go", trying my luck

And Aussies, as your special forces, navy seals and fancy operators very well know, never ever ever give up!

One of my colleagues (an Englishman) and I had a laugh a few years ago when as we discussed a project we were working on together, he stated that the project was worth a punt. I objected -- I thought it was a good opportunity and that we should keep after it.

He meant it was worth a bet. I heard him say it was worth bailing out on.

Two countries separated by a common language...

No, don't erase it. Muttley1 -- differences in language can be fun. Just recognize (recognise) the chance for misunderstanding and you'll be fine.
