Is the dealership trying to screw me over?

Typing this as I sit in the dealership lobby waiting on my truck.

About a week ago I got some new tires installed, which messed up the TPMS. The shop tried to reset the sensors but since my truck was so new they didn’t have the latest update. So they said to go into toyota and have them reset it and they would pay the cost.

Well I’m here at my dealership and they are at least quoting me 130 for an hour of service, possibly up to 3 hours of service, and possibly 100 for each sensor that is broken?!

I’m pretty f***ing pissed off right now, it shouldn’t take this long or cost this much for TPMS. I’m really hoping all the sensors come back ok and they can just reprogram them and charge me for an hour of service.

I’m afraid if the bill is too high then the shop that installed my tires will no longer want to cover the cost...

Update: Front sensor broken during tire install, shop is paying for the replacement and repair.

If the cost of this “service” comes out incredibly high can I just refuse to pay? I can’t afford to drop 700 on TPMS right now, I didn’t think that this would take so long nor be this expensive.

This! But to them it’s not screwing you over, it’s just how they do business. Now, I’ll go read your question

It was a new tech that serviced my vehicle, I’m really really hoping he didn’t damage/destroy a sensor when he was installing the tires.

If I were you I would get a quote for the maximum possible cost from the dealership and take it back to the shop first to confirm in writing that the shop will pay it. Then go from there.

As to whether the dealership is overcharging you, the answer is, of course they are!

This is why the first shop should have completed the job, not sure why they'd hand you a bill, an incomplete job, and make it your job to finish.
Depending on what's wrong with it, yeah the going hourly rate is about $115-130 an hour. If the dealership doesn't know what the other shop did, or didn't do to it, that's all they can quote. You can give them a cap.
Maybe too obvious, but did someone try the reset button? I think 3rd gens have this, low and left of the steering wheel.

should only take a few minutes.. per sensor.. how did they screw them up ? did they break them. if so they are responsible for new ones, if all they did was change out the tires, they should not need anything,, had mine done a couple times at mom and pop shop, no problems.

Changing tires WILL not mess up your TPM sensors.

That price sounds about right for dealer service and OEM sensors if they're just going to replace them.

Do you know what's actually wrong with then?

This really doesn't make sense. Did you try the reset button on the lower kick panel? If that doesn't work I'd just drive around without TPMS. Or did they destroy the sensors when they took off your old tire. The tech probably crushed a few taking them off.

It sounds like whoever changed your tires didn't know what they were doing or they broke them and they are responsible for the dealer bill .

Your problem isnt with the toyota dealership. Get your ass back to the tire dealer and tell them to finish their job. And next time dont use cut rate tire shops.

Tire shop screwed you... Simple tire swap, nothing needs to be done, If they knew how to change out tires.
