    Canada Eh!
The signal from pressing the lock, unlock, remote start etc is different (longer range) than the “passive” signal used for the proximity unlock and “start authorization”. Someone with the repeater/duplicator/relay device would need to be within a few metres of your fob to boost its signal out to another device near your car.

I have not read anything that the manufactures are doing to correct this, has anyone else? So what do you the insurance companies are going to do as this type of car thefts continue to happen? I am thinking that the vehicles with this type of remote keys and starts will go up in cost, cause they aren't going to eat their loses.

They are making vehicles with these anti theft deterrents.

    It's complicated.
Most newer vehicles don't even have the option to have a keyed ignition--and trying to retrofit a keyless entry to a keyed entry & ignition, is practically impossible.

Probably nothing... Number of cases like this should be extremely rare, especially compared to the number of keyless entry vehicles on the road. Toyota alone probably sold more than 500k such vehicles just the last year. If it was that easy to steal vehicles this way, they would be stolen left and right and it would be all over the news. Yes, it is possible to steal cars this way, but it is not easy and it is very preventable. The thieves would need to be few meters of the key for this to work, don’t keep your keys close to the exterior of your house and it won’t work. Keep in mind everything can be stolen with enough effort. Someone can come and tow away your car as well.

Also, I think, at least in Canada, police was suspecting the involvement of someone who have access to Toyota’s fob key encryption software (likely someone who worked/s for Toyota or at least at a dealer), reason being the thieves programming new fobs. This is something extremely difficult to without having the means to pull information about the vehicle and program keys. I think police was asking people when was the last time they visited the dealer.

if thieves want something of yours and they have the determination to take it there isn’t much you can do.
