Changed transmission oil and can smell while driving?

Hey guys! New to the forum and stoked to be here. I have a 2004 Tacoma 3.4l 4x4 5-speed with 62k miles. I just changed my transmission oil and switched to Redline

$30 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 GL-5 synthetic. I've been getting intermittent smells of the gear oil which I know there is a vent on the top of the tranny but didn't think I would be able to smell it. I went underneath and cleaned if any residue was left over but still didn't help. I've never noticed it when I did my subaru wasn't sure it's something worry about but thought I'd ask.

Probably left behind a little residue, at my dealer I usually spray down the area with two cans of brake cleaner then go drive till I burn off the left over residue.

Since June 2019 I've had this problem. Not all the time, but usually when I drive faster than 35-40 mph I can smell gear oil when I lower the windows. There are no traces of gear oil underneath the truck, and the problem is somewhat intermittent. I had replaced the trans and diff oils about 1,500 miles and 10 months earlier.

Still smell the stuff though.

I was taking out my shifter seat and bushing and realized that there seems to be a vent at the top where it sits in the transmission. Saw some gear oil that splashed up where the seal is. I thought I might of overfilled it and checked and it was fine. But once I cleaned it the smell came back lol Not as strong as when I first changed it though. It seems to be within the same speeds as you also.

 

In hot weather as long as the vent works like it should if the boots sealing the floor are old and worn quite possible to have the sweet smell of gear oil.

Things get warm enough fumes vent.
